The Taliban has admitted responsibility for the atrocity in Pakistan’s north-western city of Mardan that also left at least 40 men seriously injured.
Eyewitnesses said he ‘strolled’ into the compound at the Punjab Royal Regiment at about 8am local time.
Cadets were doing morning drills and the bomber detonated the large device at close range.
Prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack, saying: ‘Such cowardly attacks cannot affect the morale of the security agencies and the resolve of the nation to eradicate terrorism.’
The army has carried out a series of offensives against the al-Qaeda-linked Pakistani Taliban.
Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq said he was ‘proud to avenge people killed by US drone attacks’ and by military operations in the tribal areas. He added that attacks would continue on ‘those who protect the Americans’.
Operations in lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border have failed to break the resolve of Taliban fighters determined to destabilise the US-backed government.
The brazen bombing suggests militants are regrouping after a lull in major attacks.
In a sign of how nervous the government is about security, soldiers at the gates of the compound searched drivers before allowing them to transport coffins inside. Militant operations in recent months have been sectarian and have not focused on military targets.
‘It seems the Taliban are still a very potent force because they continue to attack installations, even if they have been quiet for a time,’ said former general Talat Masood. ‘They reassert themselves after a while, and it will be a while before we consider them less of a threat.’
