US Will 'Expel' India From Quad if Delhi Buys S-400 Missile Systems From Russia, Warns BJP Lawmaker

India's proposed purchase of S-400 air defence systems from Russia has become a thorny issue in New Delhi's bilateral ties with Washington, with successive American administrations threatening to impose economic sanctions on India if it goes ahead with the deal. Despite consistent American pressure, New Delhi has so far stuck to the deal.

Subramanian Swamy, a senior lawmaker from India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Thursday cautioned that the US would "expel" New Delhi from the "Quad" alliance, which includes the US, India, Japan, and Australia, if Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government goes ahead with the proposed purchase of S-400 missile defence systems from Russia.

The warning by the veteran Indian MP comes days after US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin hinted that India could face sanctions over its proposed purchase of the state-of-the-art Russian air defence systems.

"… we have countries that we work with from time to time that have Soviet or excuse me Russian equipment that they acquired over the years and we certainly urge all our allies and partners to move away from Soviet or excuse me Russian equipment. In some cases it was Soviet equipment because they bought it so long ago", Austin said during a press conference in New Delhi last week.

He was asked if the Biden administration could invoke sanctions against India under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a 2017 piece of US legislation targeting government and private entities specifically engaged in defence deals with Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

US Has Delhi in a ‘Dilemma’: Former Indian PM's Advisor on US Threat of Sanctions over S-400 Deal

"But to move away from that and really avoid any kind of acquisitions that would trigger sanctions on our behalf", stated Austin, adding that he did discuss the prospect of American sanctions against New Delhi during a meeting with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh.
In spite of the spectre of CAATSA sanctions, New Delhi has so far publicly resisted American pressure over the $5.43 billion defence deal.
The state-of-the-art S-400 "Triumf" air defence missile systems, touted as the most advanced of its kind in the world, are an export-quality defence product and are said to possess the capability of shooting down incoming enemy aircraft, missiles, and drones within an approximate range of 400 kilometres.
New Delhi is set to receive its first batch of the five ordered S-400 systems from Russia towards the end of 2021.
Besides Russia, only China and Turkey possess the S-400 missile systems to date.

Commenting on India’s S-400 = Instant TRP boost.

Neither USA will put sanctions on India, nor QUAD is currently a military alliance. Turkey was sanctioned because Turkish Armed Forces and Kurdish Fighters are adversaries and Kurdish Fighters and USA are allies and Turkey kills thos fighters on a daily basis as they are designated terrorists by Turkish government, plus the fact that Turkey operates F-16s which are a mainstay of US airforce and USA is afraid of one thing of losing sensitive info to Russia thats why F-35 was rejected to Turkey and F-16s are potentially compromised. Similarly India’s S-400 can “potentially leak out” Pakistan airforce’s F-16s data to Russia according to USA. Else we don’t use American fighters, only helicopters and some P8is that are converted from Boeing airliners.

Doing sanctions on India will make USA lose a trade partner, a military partner and will create an adversary.

U.S will not sanction India for the moment , but will make sure to put pressure on India in other ways

They want to sell their weapons to us, thats why pressure tactics.

As usual with the Yankees ( Oh wait I'm one too btw) , but don't forget the U.S deep inside doesn't want India to grow and back in the 70s even killed Indian space scientists which put India 30 years behind in space launch vehicle engine development aka cryogenic engines.

The U.S plays dirty

The antidote of this is India makes sure that India will also buy something big and useless from USA too. May be some defense goody.
Honestly I don't think anything will happen against India.

Yes they also killed Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha sir which put our nuclear program back.

America knows that it can’t stay as a superpower alone, India and China will one day overtake USA on economic front, China will overtake in a few years and India in a few decades like by 2040-2050. So they want to stop India and China’s rise, currently China is a bigger concern and India is not a concern, the day India also nears American economy, USA will treat India the same way it treats China. Becoming a middle income country is easier than being a high income country thats why countries fall in a middle income trap, so for India and any other country being a middle income country is not difficult but even if India falls in a middle income trap it will have a GDP of around 14-15 Trillion dollars while USA will have 25 Trillion dollars and China will have 28-30 Trillion dollars if it comes out of middle income trap and becomes an upper income country.

But India being a threat to USA is decades later, currently India is not even close to a semi developed country, and India has nothing to brag about. We’re just a 3 Trillion dollar economy compared to China’s 15 Trillion and USA’s 20 Trillion. But will eventually outpace USA decades later due to our high population.

America wants other countries to be dependent on it so that they can’t grow, as simple as that.

India is the most powerful ally of the US against China and quad will lose a third of its strength without India. Swamy's views are often exaggerated and lack critical thinking.

size is not same as power. Indian power is just a function of its population and there too its per capita power is abysmal. India has no power that it can concentrate and bring to bear on anything.

Either India plays ball or it doesn't. Either it is in the Asian camp or Western camp, India needs to decide and it is coming to a crunch. US failed to realise that India is a competing entity and difficult to manage ,as it has joined the league of the giants and cast off it's colonial strait-jackets. India has successfully used the West to improve it's economy and further the goals and no longer easily influenceable. As Asia becomes the super economy of the World India has to decide to join the new Asian economic developments or cling to their old colonial masters, ways and systems.
