As the balance of power in Asia swings towards China, Japan is building one of the most modern and powerful naval forces in the world.

In the aftermath of WWII, the US imposed a settlement on Japan, supposed to "cure" it of its war-making abilities.

In a new constitution, the country renounced war forever. But in 2013, Japan scrambled fighters 267 times to intercept incoming Chinese aircraft.

Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports for Newsnight from Tokyo.

BBC News - Why is Japan building up its navy?

The new Japanese Premier is an advocate of changing certain aspects of the Japanese Constitution.

The Japanese Military is what a military is. Men and Women with guns, ready to fight trained to kill. The only thing is that the name says Japanese Self-Defense Force. Doesn't seem very 'warrior' type.

Reclaiming its past glory.

The gold old days of the Nihon Kaigun !

Japan still wants to avenge nuclear bombing by the US.

Too much talk, show us what you got and we will not only match but exceed it!

seriously , defence.pk should implement an IQ test for people that want to register

Japan is building up against China and other asian countries
US is their biggest ally

The US also thought Japan was its ally when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.

Japan has the strongest navy in Asia, so strong in fact the US task them to do ASW duties, which the US has been neglecting itself. :D

Now, as Japan grow stronger she will give greater argument for the PLAN to ask for more funds, so expect more spending in the coming years from PLAN. The S.Korean will grow too, especially with regards to the Dokdo territorial issue against Japan, not to mention Russia build up of her Pacific fleet with the additon of the French Mistral carriers. The next 10- 20 years will be very interesting & exciting indeed.

So much for the strongest Asian navy that doesn't even have the nuclear sub and totally rely on the US technology.

The Japanese are extremely nationalistic. They are not pro US or anyone for that matter. A big war between Japan and the US in the near future is inevitable.

What are navies used for?Million tons of steel searching for airplane wreckage? And what are their faculties?

A non-combatant Japan spent its resources on development and required the US to spent its resources to defend Japan.

Now that Japan is becoming more involved in developing Military Power, it will waste its resources on Military and become a lesser Economic Power.
