Land reforms termed must for food security

Peasants face severe issues including food insecurity due to many problems but primarily the absence of land reforms

KARACHI:
Sindh has long been plagued by a high frequency of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and other natural disasters said the statement issued by Hari Welfare Association (HWA) on International Peasants Rights Day.

It said that in 2022 the situation concerning food security significantly deteriorated as a result of high costs for food and fuel, a drought, torrential monsoon rains, animal diseases, and fewer job prospects.

HWA President Akram Ali Khaskheli said in a statement that International Peasants Rights Day is a day to recognize and raise awareness about the rights and challenges faced by small-scale farmers, agricultural workers, and rural communities around the world.

Like other peasants in the world, peasants in Sindh are facing severe issues including food insecurity due to many problems but primarily the absence of land reforms in Sindh and the hegemony of a few feudal lord families on lands and the entire governance structure.

Due to its absence, there are just a few people who own land, agriculture is less productive, and wider rural and peasant groups receive minimal economic benefits. When properly carried out, land reforms can help with the problem of food insecurity in many ways.

According to the HWA president, land reforms that seek to give land to landless peasants or redistribute land to encourage equitable land distribution can expand access to land for small farmers, landless peasants (sharecroppers), and marginalized groups.

The lack of land reforms in Sindh, according to Akram, has also been exacerbated by the lack of effective law enforcement, the lack of infrastructure and resources, the anti-peasant but pro-landlord policy climate, and the lack of assistance for sharecroppers, small-scale landlords, and peasants.

The statement also said that the Sindh Tenancy Act of 1955 is a significant piece of legislation that has never been implemented. The Act regulates the relations between landlords and tenants and provides for the fixation and revision of fair rents, security of tenures, and rights of tenants to purchase land.

He added that the Sindh Land Revenue Act of 1967 governs land administration and revenue collection in the province but that has always been manipulated by the powerful class to benefit feudal lords in Sindh. The Act includes provisions related to land record management, land ownership, and transfer of land, and aims to streamline the land administration system to ensure transparency and fairness in land transactions.

Great news.

China is very interested in investing in Pakistani farm sector and we should take full advantage of this.

There u go ! Selling land to a foreign power

Back in the 1990 both both the Indians and the Chinese had the same GDP.

China used the Indian communist parties to prevent the Indians embracing the WTO while China embraced the WTO with both hands.

Now after 30 years, Chinese have 10 times the Indian GDP.

Today Pakistan was able to stop Indian farm laws being implemented using Khalistanis/Sikhs while Pakistan moving ahead with Farm reform.

In 20 years, Pakistani farms will have 10 times the Indian farm output.

But DHA land in Multan was built by clearing Mango Orchids - how ironic

Mangos are seasonal fruits.

They do not support food security like Wheat does.

Vertical farming in urban areas must be ensured across Pakistan. Carbon neutral sustainable communities should be encouraged to bring industrialisation to the masses rather than bringing the masses to it.

Much of desertification vulnerable land should be rescued by 2030.

that is silly. China developed as a walmart cheapo goods factory and while they did not fritter away all of that, are doing dismally now as the west starts reducing orders to China. Indian otoh is developing slowly but in its own terms. You wouldn't understand that.

Go ahead and let CCP into Pakistan farming as you want to - in 10 years they will own it all and you Pakistanis will be the labor working for CCP landlords. For proof you don't have to go far - within Pakistan in 10 years of CPEC the country is bankrupt, can't pay even interest and can't afford gas for even its own military. CCP completely swallowed you there

Modi's entire economic platform was designed by his Communist Party member Mentor from China, lmfao.

Pakistan's problem is that Pakistan chooses not to do things that it needs to do.

This is why Modi's India is doing better than Pakistan.

Pretending that China controls BRI/CPEC countries is kind of funny, because the only countries that implemented Communist Party style reforms are Vietnam, India, and Bangladesh.

Your narrative is simply hilariously inverted.

You brag about India's economic fortunes turning around, and then pretend that China will destroy countries.

While forgetting that India's economic recovery was largely due to the Communist Party of China's policy support for Modi, which he personally asked for.

Vietnam, India and Bangladesh implemented Communist Party of China's policy reforms, and they are all doing relatively well now.

Yeah grass isnt green on the other side.
China has been involved in few very successful projects in Balochistan but has anyone seen any profits going back to people of Balochistan or Pakistan.

China will not care for the common Pakistan until they can achieve whats favourable to chinese national interest.

Waderas specially in Sindh & some parts of Punjab still live in 1800s, until Government finally wakes up nothing will change and only selected few will keep looting these profits

The entire country is living on hand-outs from China due to the country being too lazy to be productive while spending way more than they make.

Imran Khan literally bankrupted the country, and you are still praising your Prophet/God (Imran Khan).

China has literally made negative money due to this.

China is not your colonial master.

It is not responsible for your own actions.
