How are we an export driven economy?

90% of our industrial workforce works in export oriented industry. Without those industry our economy will come down to zero.

What do we export in the big western economies in
bulk other than Garments. Malaysia Japan & S.korea are eg of export driven economies as they
export Hi-tech Value added products unlike us.

If you did not know except Malaysia everybody started with weaving industry. I still remember buying Japanese Tetron which were a delicacy once upon a time. Toyota started their business as weaver.

Protectionism is a must to devolop nascent industries
If walton makes a car today do you think it can survive competition from Toyota & Nissan.

Well, I already told yu, our domestic car market is heavily protected yet there is no car industry. What do you protect when you have nothing to protect. The car market is so small that nobody ever will invest in car plant. First you need to create a market. Instead of imposing high taxes govt should encourage consumers to buy few cars so that the others will be interested in investing for the market.

Protectionism & GOV support comes in different forms like subsidising R&D cost, tax holidays etc.

Well that can be done in a selective manner. No problem with that.

Increasing tarrifs on imported cars won't allow devolopment of Automobile sector. Have you heard of Japanese Gov support of devolopment of colour TVs in the 1960's. The Jap gov subsidized
R&D of the major competitive campanies while forgein cars were banned throughout the 60's and
may be in the early 70's as well. They only opened up when they knew their cars are good
enough to compete in the Intl market. Its better to have home made junk to help an industry
grow at home.

Yes govtment can invest in R&D same way as United States. Thats how Boeing and IBM became world leader. These can be done in indirect manner, like govt commit to buy technology and to provide cost and effort for R&D. But for a 3rd world country like us, we are a long way to go before govt can do such things. We even dont have enough money to repair our roads.

Our economy is export driven. Protectionism will not work for our case. We wont pay our hard earned money to subsidise western consumers. Besides protectionism encourage low quality products which in turn loose competitiveness and eventually become sick and get closed.

Our domestic car market is heavily protected yet we havent seen a single car manufacture in this country. So your theory fails.

Usually, a car manufacturing company starts with assembling cars. It imports certain brands of cars and assemble these in its factory. The cars come out cheaper than the imported ones of same brands. The company then finds out small workshops in the country, who are able to produce certain parts. A time comes when many of the components are produced in these workshops under the patronage of the parent company.

A national govt encourages the process by imposing a nominal amount of tax on the CKD components so that the car prices become cheaper when assembled in the country than the fully assembled imported ones. However, as usual, the stupid bureaucrats of the GoB are doing just the opposite. They impose such an amount of tax/duty on the imported CKD components that the price of a locally assembled car shoots up almost to a level of an imorted car of the same model.

This could be one reason that companies so far have not shown interest in manufacturing cars in the country.

Look who is talking:rofl::rofl::rofl: What did INDIA do from 1947-1992. Did TATA, Maruti, MAhindra
became gaints in one day. Don't rant for your stooges who are hell bent on destroying our industry. Every Successful country like S.korea & JAPAN practiced protectionism during initial stages of
industrilization. Don't take BDs for fools.

Many economists in India argue that 1947-1991 period was lost period for Indian Industrial sector when our industries were subdued under a toxic mixture of socialist policies and licence raj. Our elders still remember the times when one have to wait for years to get a Bajaj scooter.

Protectionism is not the answer...providing a level playing field is the solution. TATA, Maruti may be now giants but if GoI open doors to Toyota, Honda, Nissan no holds barred, they don't stand a chance in front of these MNCs. Thats why GoI is very particular that foreign car companies has to make a certain % of their cars in Indian plants..thus they provide jobs and investment in the country.
