An young foreign student has been left in an induced coma after being bashed and robbed in a Melbourne park.
Police are searching for eight men and one woman after Manriajwinder Singh, 20, was brutal bashed in the early hours of yesterday morning.
It's alleged Mr Singh was kicked in the jaw which caused him to fall to the ground, where he was knocked unconscious, then kicked and attacked with a stick.
A 23-year-old man was allegedly punched in the face, before another friend ran to get help.
Two mobile phones were stolen from the men.
Officers have described the incident as an opportunistic crime.
"They saw two vulnerable victims minding their own business, and targeted them, they're just cowards," Senior Constable Foley said.
Police have released CCTV footage of the incident that happened east of Princess Bridge at Birrarung Marr around 4.15am.
The Reservoir man, 20, was taken to The Alfred hospital where he remains in an induced coma.
His brother Yadwinder Singh told News Limited it was his first night out in the city.
"Whats done is done, I [can't] do anything about it. If they wanted to snatch his money, phone, so be it - but not hit him so bad in head," Singh said.
Melbourne Embona detectives have released CCTV images of eight men and a woman who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.
It shows the men, of African appearance aged in their late teens to early 20s, running away through Federation Square.
Any witnesses or anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
