New Delhi: This cricket scorecard read more like a telephone number written vertically. A Chinese U-16 team was bowled out for all of 9 runs against Afghanistan, losing the match by 349 runs.
Batting second, the Chinese players appeared to be walking back to the pavilion in a line as no batsman managed to put up any resistance against a determined bowling attack. The statistics from the match make for a sorry image as six out of the nine runs scored were of extras. Afghanistan had already smashed their way with the bat and were bowling to defend a mammoth total. The Afghans though, could not have predicted the ease with which they eventually won the match.
Chinese skipper Gaofeng Hu managed to claim two runs and was the highest-scorer in an innings which had two batsmen retiring hurt after being struck on the foot by Naveen-ul-Haq. Six of the eight wickets to fall were bowled out with ul-Haq claiming five. Chinese batsmen lasted 8.4 overs before surrendering.
In the past, the Chinese have hired foreign coaches to train budding cricketers in the country but against the Afghans in this particular match, no one reason could be provided for the utter collapse.
The country is an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council.

AFGHANISTAN MAKE IT FOUR OUT OF FOUR
Afghanistan were pushed all the way by UAE in their last match but it was a different matter against China at Traidhos Oval when they won by 349 runs in the most one-sided contest of the tournament.
Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat and in the early stages were content to progress at a fairly modest five runs per over. Their run-rate was to increase throughout the innings as four batsmen passed the fifty mark. Abdul Akhundzada made 68 from 63 balls, Parvis Khan 79 from 54; Tariq Khan then hit an unbeaten 83 from just 42 balls and Imran Khan made 51 from 36 balls as Afghanistan reached 348 for 4 in their 40 overs.
China’s reply never recovered from the loss of both openers retired hurt in the same over bowled by Shafiullah Mohammad and only two batsmen Hu Gaofeng (2) and Shen Jiajie (1) got off the mark. China’s total failed to reach double figures as Naween-ul-Haq took five more wickets at a cost of just two runs.
Naween has now hit the stumps 13 times in four matches by bowling fast and straight. It is a simple recipe for success but it has proved far too much for the limited techniques of many of the young batsmen on view in this tournament.
Although Afghanistan, Qatar and UAE can still finish level on eight points in the final table, Afghanistan’s fourth win of the competition and their hugely impressive net run-rate effectively mean that they will surely now qualify for the Elite Division at under-16 level.
They are a highly impressive team and were far too strong for the extremely inexperienced Chinese.
