IAF SU30 Crashes

HAL-made Sukhoi crashes

Barely a week after President Pratibha Patil undertook a much publicised sortie in the fighter, a Sukhoi-30 MKI jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Jethagaon in Jaisalmer while returning from a regular training mission. While both pilots managed to eject on time and landed safely, the second crash of India’s most advanced fighter jet in less than eight months has thrown a question mark over its reliability.

IAF PRO Group Captain M G Mehta on Monday said, “The aircraft was on a routine training exercise when the incident occurred and both pilots managed to eject to safety. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.” He added that the fighter crashed into a vacant plot of land and caused no loss of life or destruction to property.

Rajasthan defence PRO Lt Col. N N Joshi stated that the Sukhoi aircraft took off from Jodhpur at around 4.30 pm at the IAF range in Pokharan but crashed sometime between 5.30 pm and 5.45 pm. While officials reached the site of the crash, the black box has not yet been recovered. Sources said that the entire Sukhoi fleet, which numbers close to 90 and is currently deployed in Pune, Bareily and Tezpur, has been grounded till a preliminary investigation gives an all clear following the crash. Sources also said that the aircraft that crashed was a brand new fighter that had recently been rolled out by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India and was part of an upcoming squadron in Pune.

This is the second crash of a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter after a fatal accident on April 30 in which an officer lost his life. The fleet was grounded for close to a month after the April crash and sources said that the fighters are likely to stay on the ground till investigators give a go ahead.

The Sukhoi-30 MKI fleet, the latest in IAF’s inventory, has had an exceptional safety record but the two recent crashes have caused concern in military circles. The earlier crash, which was attributed to a failure in the flight control system, was never conclusively investigated as the black box was completely destroyed.

In July, Defence Minister AK Antony had said that while there are no serious maintenance problems with the aircraft, the fleet was grounded for three weeks to ascertain the cause of the crash. He also revealed that the reason for the crash was a “likely failure of the fly-by-wire system”. This came after Russian experts tried to put the blame for the crash on the IAF by saying that a human error led to the accident.

yes it is but we lost 2 plane with in 6-8 month this about serious concern

I think we need to wait for the investigations....my be the crashed jets belong to the very first batch...which is due for a midlife upgrade and overhaul.

this a/c made by HAL which start production from 2004 so it is not so old only 5-6 yr old.......

HAL has SU30 production line, crashed one also HAL produced
It cost around 20 million no need worry add two more to list,

HAL has to look into the technical fault if any over come the basics

IAF is using fighters extensively that why there are more crash ratio

Whats the big deal here......this is the second Sukhoi 30 crash since the aircraft was inducted 12 years ago......

Two Crashes in 12 Years.....thats a commendable record for any fighter aircraft family.

MKI introduced in 2002, any ways its right that its not to worry that only 2 MKI lost in last 7 years. but it could be worried taht IAF lost 2 MKI's within last 8 month.

On the otherside India lost too many Mig 21, Mig 27 in last 2 decades

Is This News Fake ?

Su 30mki's unit cost is US $40 million. Since India is doing mostly assembling with imported parts, the cost saving is labor only, which is negligible. Even the LCA, (also using majority imported parts, composite material, engine, etc...) cost more than US $20 million per plane (not counting the research cost). The MKI is a twin engine heavy fighter/bomber.

Yes, but things are going to change::

MOSCOW: The first fully indigenous Su-30MKI fighter plane will roll off Indian assembly lines in 2010, a top executive at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited said on Wednesday.

“Next year, HAL will achieve 100 per cent indigenisation of the Sukhoi aircraft — from the production of raw materials to the final plane assembly,” V. Balakrishnan, general manager, Aircraft Manufacturing Division, told The Hindu here.

A five-member HAL delegation is taking part in MAKS-2009, Russia’s international air show now under way here.

Out of the 230 Su-30MKI air superiority multirole fighters the Indian Air Force plans to induct by 2015, 140 aircraft are to be built in India. License production began in 2004, with the first planes assembled from knockdown kits supplied by Russia. The programme provided for a gradual increase in the number of parts and components produced locally.

Really? How will India manage producing the engine, to begin with? 100% does not look like a truthful statement.

These are official statements....and press releases....

The Al-31FP is built in India by HAL at the Koraput facility under a deep technology transfer agreement.

I simply don't believe them. If they can't manage a much smaller, simpler Kaveri engine, I doubt that they can produce the bigger engine required for Su-30. Beside, India does not have the ability to manufacturer advanced material yet for jets, which is why it has to import the material for the LCA project. Also, India cannot yet make most of the on board electronics and radar...
