10 Worst Things About India

The Alpha Bet
Mon, Dec 28, 2015

  • While the Indian population continues to upgrade to the latest gadgets, automobiles, state-of-the-art homes and every possible luxury item known to mankind – we don’t feel too accountable for our surroundings. Much is being done to raise sensitivity about our surroundings, but the action against it is not proportionate by any measure. Who hasn’t seen a tourist’s rendition of India? Dirty, garbage strewn streets, gutters, lakes with empty wafer packets etcetera etcetera. You can’t blame a photographer for clicking what is shocking, even to his lens!

    Poverty

According to the World Bank Report, only 11% of all Indians fall under the poverty line but the reality paints a very different picture. At least 30% of India’s population is still living below the poverty line, in absence of a minimum wage.

  • 3/10

    Unreal Religious Practices

India is a land of gods! Gods, that apparently grant wishes when given expensive offerings. Goats, chickens, gold, fruit. You name it. Is this really a price the gods want us to invest to get our wishes fulfilled?

  • 4/10

    Lack of Respect for Women

Need I say more? From clothes to general habits like smoking or drinking in public. The rules are starkly different for men and women in India. Women will be looked upon as loose, immoral – the works! All this, even though both genders are rubbing shoulders in all aspects of life.

  • 5/10

    Corruption

The rich and influential are often well protected against illegal activities, and get away with almost anything. It gives license to many, to live above the law only because they can ‘afford’ to.

  • 6/10

    Racism

A strong caste system is still prevalent in India. There are places that the so called ‘lower classes’ cannot visit, and will not be welcomed in. in some communities, a person’s last name is an indicator of his/her caste and they are looked upon accordingly. Religious diversity is welcome and rightly so, but when it percolates to forming barriers between two people of the same country and impacts their rights to the land, it means trouble. Some castes like Brahmins believe themselves to be far superior to others and will not even touch or eat the food of a lower caste.

  • 7/10

    Arranged Marriage

Once again, a primitive practice still prevalent even in urban India. What’s more is marriages have now gone online – with ‘Shaadi’ portals, where one can pick a prospective bride or groom. This really goes a long way in showing how advanced and yet primitive India is. E-commerce with a difference indeed! Pick a partner and click to marry!

  • 8/10

    Languagism

Indians of different states and even regions and districts within states speak different languages. At times, this forms a hindrance to Indians travelling from one state to the next as conversing in a common language may not be possible. Even with a national language like Hindi, many states choose not to mandate use of the language.

  • 9/10

    Sexual Assault

Women and even effeminate males are teased and at times groped in thick crowds, on busy streets and in public vehicles. Lewd behavior seems to be common place. Not acceptable, but common, with most women not open to talking about the harsh reality they face every day. In joint families if a female or male child is assaulted by an adult, the family may hush the event in fear of tarnishing the family name and marriage prospects for the child in future!

  • 10/10

    Shortage of Electricity

Power cuts without backup are not a rarity in India. It could be summer, where large power consumption is the reason, or the rain, which has wet the coal in thermal plants or worn out wires which may takes days to fix. Life as we know it may come to a standstill, but Indians must adjust, and be thankful for the electricity, that we pay for! (All images sourced from Getty Images)

India has not released its Consumption Expenditure Survey (CES) data since 2011-12. Normally a CES is conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSO) every five years. But the CES of 2017-18 (already conducted a year late) was not made public by the Government of India. Now, we hear that a new CES is likely to be conducted in 2021-22, the data from which will probably not be available before end-2022.

Meanwhile, we know that the economy has been slowing for nine quarters prior to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Unemployment had reached a 45-year high in 2017-18, as revealed by NSO’s Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS).

Come on mate, if it is something bad about Pakistan, you treat it as fact, and if it is something bad about India, then you say questionable source, LOL!
