Infantry Weapons Discussion Thread

Imo it wont be much useful in indo-pak situation. Saw it being used in syria and iraq but don't think it will be useful for pak army, unless we want to fight an urban warfare with india.

If the weapon is good then it will be useful in many areas of Pakistan, specially in mountains, where this kind of firepower matter more then plains.

Yes its rapid fire capability can be used in counter insurgency operations particularly in mountainous regions as you said, but won't be much useful in a war situation. Pakistan army has some type of grenade launchers i think but never seen or heard of them being used regularly.

I am creating this thread for discussing current and future infantry weapons of Pakistan military (all branches).

I came across following video showing Russian portable Grenade launcher, is it good for PA to have??

Good for ssg, airborne troops ( which we have very less of ) to provide quick indirect lethal fire support , ie mimicking mortar support. It could potentially be useful in the mountains but only for defensive purposes , where the enemy is attacking uphill and there is plenty of concealment. However if there is no concealment or own forces are on the attack , this will be quite useless as the enemy would immediately call in own fire support on it, it would simply be a target. Rather get something akin to XM25, more rifle launched grenades or something akin to the Carl Gustav, which would provide lethal bunker busting ability , direct fire support , and anti light armour or mrap ( which are very common in Kashmir. Then again these weapons will only work in engagement ranges of sub 1000m , while in normal loc violations ranges exceed that by a lot.

What Pakistan really should do is develop a new generation of light , portable mortar. Equip them at platoon level with one 60mm advanced mortar , with gps or other positioning system for cheap smart shells, you would not need a seeker just a computer on the mortar to calculate where the exact parameters for the shot so that every shots a hit. This would be lethal for small assault teams , for company level support provide 3 80mm smart mortars, possibly with guided top attack anti tank shells

we can put them on M11A's Personnel Carriers , it would be a deadly firepower for close and medium ranges specially for forward raiding and Patrolling parties in FATA .. sometimes they just have to shoot and scoot from the place ..

Frontier Corps has russian AGLs.

PA does use them in limited numbers... along with QZL series launchers...

While SF have Milkors.

Local companies like DSA are also offering their AGLs.

While a deal with signed with Turkey to provide AGLs for Army.

An accurate, light weight, rapid firing Grenade Launcher will be good asset for PA in fighting war in Kashmir and Punjab, even in sindh for trench fighting and mounted on APCs.

What I came to know is 60mm light mortars are not liked by PA as it dont provide desired punch, but they like AGLs as they have been very effective in operations till now, they say it provide immediate rapid direct firepower to take out enemy positions and moving soldiers/terrorist to soldiers on ground, with max range of 2100M it looks good weapon.

PA like modern AGLs for sure, even MK-19 is in limited use.

What Pakistan most needs is to upgrade its squad automatic machine guns similar to the Russians which are introducing the PKM with a connected ammunition bag strapped to the soldiers back.

Milkors, no problem but that AGL is too big for infantry squad duty
unless we're talking mechanized.

16 kgs don't allow for mobility up a Khal Kot trail or mount Sikaram.
Classically, Pakistani soldiers are rather light and nimble in part due
to limited gear and so are the Tribal/Taliban/terrorist units.
If by switching to a dismounted weapon you have to rely on carriers,
it will cost on overall deployment tactics and a 60mm+ mortar fits the
role just as well if not better. My own good'ol' VAB carries 81mms but
tracts 120mms.

As ArmyResearch offered, the best use of such as the AGS would be in
point defence with some area denial as in protecting COPs, FOBs and
isolated border outposts.

Best of days all, Tay.
