We should thank the USA for F-14's, but again we should condemn them for stealing our fully prepaid money for the F16's they had to sell us and also for denying technical support to our air crafts that they were committed to. But I think Iraq-Iran war, as the largest war of the century after the two world wars in terms of the number of troops and ammunition used in the war and also the casualties, proved that the US made jet fighters are really superior to their soviet counterparts. Just like it proved that soviet tanks were superior to their US counterparts.

Though air craft and ammo supply is very important but the most important part of air battle is the quality of pilots and their morale. It is better to have an air force with highly trained pilots and high morale than an air force with best air crafts and low quality pilots. Iran's advantage was not in F-14's though they were important but the real advantage of Iran was the quality and morale of its pilots. They did their job well despite sanctions on them. But now it is time for Iran to invest more in aerospace technology and design a national multi-role fighter for its own. It is not necessary that this fighter be the best in the world. Just a mediocre low cost fighter will do the job if built in large numbers and flown by well trained pilots specially if it is augmented with superb IFF and ground based air defense systems.
