The Lal Masjid siege began four years ago on this day. Here are a few facts about the mosque, which perhaps might not be in the public realm. In 1964, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) earmarked a plot for the construction of a jamia masjid, in Sector G-6, Islamabad. The CDA constructed the mosque which was painted red and, therefore, came to be commonly known as Lal Masjid. Maulana Muhammad Abdullah from Rajanpur, was the first Imam of the mosque. On the instructions of General Zia, the CDA constructed a quarter for the Imam and a muezzin and redesigned and renovated the mosque from 1981 -83. Over a period of time, the mosque administration encroached on 954 square yards (sqy) of CDA land. The latter served notices, for vacation of encroached land, but the Imam refused to oblige. During the Afghan jihad, Abdullah had become a powerful religious figure.

In 1988, Maulana Abdullah requested for allotment of a piece of land for the construction of a girls’ madrassa, for which the CDA allotted a plot. In 1994, the authority allotted additional land, making the madrassa plot 205.56sqy. Subsequently the madrassa’s name was changed to Jamia Hafsa. Maulana Abdullah was killed in 1998. His sons Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rasheed Ghazi took over the administration.

Adjacent to the madrassa, there were four plots, allotted by the CDA to a children’s library, a women’s library, an authors’ corner and a gymnasium. The children’s library was constructed while other plots and some CDA land was lying vacant. In March 2001, the management of Lal Masjid started construction on the women’s library plot. The enforcement staff of CDA tried to demolish the illegal construction. However, on assurance of the imam, that the management would demolish the illegal construction within one week, the staff abandoned its demolition plan. On the next visit of the enforcement staff, however, the Imam had gathered more than 100 Talibs, armed with battons, who attacked the staff. A request to register the case was made to SHO Aabpara Police Station and a demolition operation was planned on September 10, 2002. However this operation was postponed due to various reasons. Emboldened by the inactivity of the government, the management of the mosque, over the next four years, constructed a number of buildings, encroaching on 7,337sqy of CDA land. According to a CDA survey conducted in 2007, 194 mosques in Islamabad were legal while 60 were built on encroached land. However, even of the 194 legal mosques, 165 had encroached on CDA land.

In the meantime, the two brothers also developed links with jihadi elements and foreign militants. In 2004, Lal Masjid issued a fatwa that any Pakistani soldier killed in Fata did not deserve Muslim funeral prayers or burial in a Muslim graveyard. In 2004, Rasheed’s car, was allegedly used for terrorist activities in Islamabad. The administration wanted to arrest both the brothers but did not do so on the intervention of a minister.

In January 2007, the Islamabad administration identified five illegal mosques, constructed in green areas and on VIP routes. On the direction of the interior ministry, these were demolished. The management of Lal Masjid reacted and students of Jamia Hafsa occupied the adjacent children’s library. A few illegal acts of the mosque’s management, running of a parallel administration in the capital and failure of negotiations by various renowned ulemas, led to an army operation on July 3, 2007.

Lal Masjid siege

Lal Masjid is still there and Lal Masjid Mafia is still there. They are now working as a joint venture with grand Land mafia. Madrisah is on ,play is on.

Although I disagree with his views about Taliban but some of his articles have been impressive, Thumbs up for this one! :)

After red mosque op.......... the wave of suicide bombing started............. we shouldnt have used force....... instead we should have forced these bastards out....

the Ghazi force terrorist group was formed in reaction to lal masjid operation. Mullah Abdul Aziz is a Chronic liar, bigot, hate monger and incites violence and uprising against the state openly in his sermons before and after his arrest, strange that no one considers this guy as a threat to the sovereignty of the state.

The funniest part is that this guy who has the extremist Deobandi/ wahabi ideology and a known shia hater has been quoting Imam Hussain and Ali’s quotations when he & his brother went all out in their fight against the Musharraf’s government.

all because of these fascists, we are suffering from civil war today !!

Seems like you don't know any other words than these inane ones that you keep repeating often, I guess its due to the earlier discussed intellectual levels.

Try and stick to the topic, your contribution to most threads is as useful as a two legged horse in a horse race.

it was quite shocking for every one.

their father abdulla once spoke against Imam Hussain by telling that the war of karbala was not the war of Islam that drew criticism and demos. by shias in islamabad.

while his sons started quoting Hazrat Ali and Imam Hussain. I still remember the youger son of abdulla announced a day before his killing that they were follower of the path of Hussain and his announcement was published in all newspapers.

The incident serves to highlight one basic fact that applies across the sub continent.

Encroachments are either not detected in time or often turned a blind eye to either for love, religion or money. The Govt neither has the will to enforce its laws nor the inclination to bring down such encroachments due to political , religious or financial expediency.

When the Govt does wake up it is often not due to legitimate reasons ( i.e. the law having been broken) but due some other issue which then becomes a cause of confrontation. In all cases its is too little too late. The nation / city / colony meanwhile bears the brunt of the lack of will on part of the Govt to enforce the law.

Lal Masjid became the rallying point of all that was then wrong in Pak.The rest is for its citizens to surmise.

LAL MASJID was the biggest blunder done by Musharraf because of this operation Pakistan is getting trouble by every passing day thousands of Pakistanis have been killed after this operation

It was the execution of it..
You dont go and blast away at these people.
It could have been a blockade, cut the water, power.. food off.
How long would they last..

On the grapevine.. it seems the shooting of the SSG commander triggred the endgame, with the troops becoming bloodthirsty.
And Musharraf had no option but to unleash his own commando kind...
after which it was no holds barred.

there was no choice. FC personal were attacked and martyred. ministry of environment building was set ablaze. police failed to control them and hecne military was called in. I do not think there was any other choice left.

this mulla was the employee of the governmnet but tried to built his own empire.

someone has to stop these hate spreaders.

Yes, there was no choice left but to attack these fanatics.

BTW, those, especially foreigners here, who complain that Pakistani society is not doing enough against the religious fanatics should study the Lal Masjid crisis carefully. This was just one mosque/madrassah complex. But one alone triggered so much violence once the State did act against them. Not saying the govt. should not have acted against them. Just giving a perspective.
PS. I think the Pakistani media--especially Jang Group/Geo-- bear a lot of blame for the violence related to Lal Masjid. By giving live coverage to the dying Mullah leader of Lal Masjid and others they were made heroes for the Jihadis. Imagine FBI giving live coverage to David Koreish as he was being taken out?
