MiG-29 vs Su-27

Someday I hope someone would rip open the Mig29 and rebuild it with today's technology and slap in the avionics that it deserved.

How about MiG 29 being built with Snecma engines having thrust of 11,000 KG, and extremely sophisticated western avionics, something like Super MKI?

The first iteration was called a 'base defence fighter', since it couldn't go too far from its base.

However, later versions rectified that. The latest SMT/UPG have loads more internal fuel, and much improved range. Not to mention significant multirole capability.
SMT versions appeared too late after the fall of USSR. The overwhelming majority of produced MiG-29 are with little fuel.

It was never mean to be a light fighter, but a medium one.
The initial intention was to have a couple like Americans - heavy superiority fighter and light front fighter. But since Soviet avionics was too heavy and engines were not reliable enough they forced to made a medium fighter.

Mrs, even the F-16 isn't a light fihgter its in the mid range fighter.
