0.9pc of population of Pakistan pays tax: Ali Arshad Hakeem

Chairman Federal Board of Revenue,Ali Arshad Hakeem said that Pakistan has one of the lowest tax to GDP ratios in the world as only 0.9 per cent of the population of the country pays income tax.

0.9% of Pakistanis pay income tax even though Pakistan has a ridiculously low income tax rate of max 20%.

Pakistan has one of the highest tax evasion rates on the planet -- and the results are obvious for all to see. There is no money for proper law enforcement, public education, public health, infrastructure, etc. etc. etc.

Income tax is only part of the picture. There are lots of indirect taxes that provide more revenue to the government, although not enough to meet its requirements.

Consumption taxes hit poor people disproportionately worst. By contrast, income and property taxes target the middle/upper classes.

Pakistan's tax structure is geared to punish the poor while favoring the middle/rich, and the middle/rich classes are not going to change the system any time soon.

I agree with these comments, Sir. We do have a regressive tax system that punishes the poor and rewards the wealthy. However, one thing is certain. It has to change given that our needs are growing so rapidly that, despite the rich classes not wanting to pay taxes, they will have to do so if their golden goose is not to be killed.

Good decision he is not yet PM so he will travel in his personal capacity and we have to restore good relations with all our neighbouring countries ASAP and convince them that to invest in Pakistan. Its not personalities or visits which matter its the "Economy" NS have to do whatever in his power to bring the economic revolution.

it started again :disagree:

when will this ever stop?

Pakistan is in poor economic condition. We should avoid going to IMF and instead seek assistance from Saudi Arabia.

and saudi arabia will give money no questions asked, no condition attached  and saudis arnt connected to US indirectly and serving US needs?

what kind of empty headed beggar this guy is, even more embarrassing then zardari who begged at UN

can pakistan have independent policies if we have this act?

In any case, you would have to go to IMF, which itself is begging bowl by all means. Its not by choice. Thanks to PPP's governance, Economists are urging to take the action immediately.

Economists want PML-N to open immediate talks with IMF - thenews.com.pk

economists are idiots.... economy is not bad but rather ok. infation is very much under control and growth rate is not bad if not good. with easing of monetary policy in coming time (bec of controlled inflation), growth will increase. the only worry is the dwindling foreign reserves. if we could keep them alive through some alternate means, we dont need IMF.
the only thing PML-N needs to think about is raising taxes and sorting out the energy problem (circular debt mostly). and we dont need IMF for these two. also this time IMF is charging higher interest rates.
if nothing works and we have to have to go to the IMF, we should simply tell them to extend our repayment time period. that is the only pressure which our reserves are facing right now - repayment of IMF loans. now taking loans at higher price to sustain the pressure of previous loans is not a very wise policy move.

Of course, he could do what self-respecting nations do and raise the money by collecting taxes.

Or he can do what a bhikari always does...

tax collection takes time and all of a sudden you can't have billions through tax sir Saudi Arabia is only option.
