Pakistan Air Force: Punching Above Its Weight

Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on a visit to the flying school of then RPAF located at Risalpur on 13 April 1948 said,

“A country without a strong Air Force is at the mercy of any aggressor. Pakistan must build up her Air Force as quickly as possible. It must be an efficient Air Force, Second To None.”

Pakistan Air Force has always kept its standard high to meet the challenges of aerial warfare, especially in this 21st century. Better engineering technologies, better tactics, and better training have brought new opportunities to take advantage of for the defense of airspace. PAF is not new to the usage of flying simulators for more efficient and cost-effective training of pilots or to the threat of Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAM). It perhaps scored the only recent example of such a hit in the world on 27th February 2019, by taking down an Indian SU-30 MKI Air-Superiority fighter aircraft belonging to No. 221 of IAF; from PAF’s American made F-16 Block 20 MLUed with Serial No. 84606 flown in No. 11 Squadron by Squadron Leader Hasan Mahmood Siddiqui.

PAF has also equipped itself with a jointly produced aircraft, Joint-Fighter (JF) 17 Thunder, and is currently introducing the 3rd iteration of its single-seater version. There are 50 Block I variants (upgraded to Block II standard), 62 Block II variants, and 26 dual seater or Block B variants produced by CAC & PAC. Flight tests for Block III variants are ongoing and 12 of them are expected to be operationalized by PAF’s No. 17 ‘Tigers’ Squadron soon. Some salient features of the latest block include KLJ-7A AESA radar, one additional hardpoint (7+1) under its fuselage, improved MAWs, more composites to improve load capacity, PL-12 and PL-15 AAMs for BVR combat, RD-93 which later will be replaced by RD-93MA, improved EW capability (Pajnad), in-flight refueling (IFR), ASELPOD, better HUD, 3-axis digital fly-by-wire (FBW) control system and a new HMD/S. The light fighter aircraft costs between 18-35 million dollars depending upon the configuration and is expecting sales to multiple developing countries.

PAF is also inducting Chinese J-10 C multirole aircraft as the threat from its Eastern neighbor is ever increasing. J-10 C houses a more powerful radar, 11 hardpoints, and is a different class from JF 17 being a medium role fighter jet. Pakistan currently flies around 378 fighter aircraft including 18 F-16 Blk 52+, 43 F-16 MLU, 13 F-16 ADA, 134 JF 17 Block II standard, 69 Mirage V, 56 Mirage III, and 45 F-7PG. The addition of JF 17 Block III and J-10C 4++ generation fighter jets will augment the air power of PAF.

Pakistan Air Force has also invested in net-centric capabilities including building its datalink called Link-17, C4ISR framework, AWACs, EW aircraft, and fuel tankers to boost its strength. Fighter aircraft with their pinpoint accuracy especially using sniper pods have successfully targeted terrorists and dismantled their infrastructure from the ground. As air battles evolve, PAF is continuously evolving itself too to keep up with new tactics, strategies, and equipment.

yes, we will move the control of the army to PDF GHQ. after some devine entity restores the truest of all the a'immah ( أئمة ) namely the retard hazrat imam taliban khan sahib to the throne of Pakistan as the supreme leader
wow

It would be interesting to see if the JF17 Block II's can be upgraded to the Block II variant or not.

You mean to say "To Block -3 Standard".

----------------------------------------------------------

Considering there was news of PAC - PAF setting up TRM & AESA Radar assembly setup, its only logical to think that they were looking for it with numbers supporting that initiative.

Those numbers could only come from

-Assembly of New Block III Jets [Limited order at this stage]
-Export Orders for future JF-17C / Bravo variant
-Modification / Upgrade to existing fleet of A & B Variants.

" The radar is being built under license at our avionics production factory (APF). This facility has worked on the Italian FIAR (now Leonardo) Grifo radars [for both the Chengdu F-7P/PG and Dassault Mirage IIIs], as well as the original KLJ-7 in the JF-17 Block I/IIs, which makes it more than capable of working on the new one.”

- Air Marshal Noman

---------------------------------------------------

"KLJ-7A air detection range of 170 km, which is a very surprising figure, to know KLJ-7A antenna aperture of about 600 mm, can be arranged T / R module should Not more than 1000, to achieve such a detection distance that the domestic T / R module in power, sensitivity, etc. have a greater breakthrough, it also means that JF-17 in the facelift of the KLJ-7A, its detection The distance has exceeded the Indian Air Force Su-30MKI." Chinese Media

With a KLJ- 7A production line being created at APF, there is every likelihood that the Block II JF-17s could be upgraded too.

Stop Bus.jpg

With Antenna aperture for KLJ-7A quoted as 600mm - The nose size / Diameter in PT-04 for Block -II was reported 640 mm , and Production Model Block 2 as 664 mm [Nose Area increased] , extremely close to M2K 674 mm. [Interesting is Nose Dia / Size for Rafale but lets not go into it]

Stop Bus.jpg

Hence some minor Structural Changes related to Nose Cone area may be required to accommodate AESA Radar .
Another area would be around Wing root to accommodate Weapons - Lets see.

"The JF-17 Block-2 airframe is virtually identical to that of the Block-1."

JF-17 BLOCK-2 AND BLOCK-3 DETAILS CONFIRMED QUWA

Air Cdre Ahsan Rafiq, deputy chief project director (Ops) JF-17 at the time, and former CO of the JF-17 Test and Evaluation Unit, said in February 2017: “Block II is an upgraded Block I with an air-to-air refuelling (AAR) probe, and enhanced oxygen system [to allow the pilot to stay in the air longer] and improved electronic countermeasures system (ECS).”

It was quoted in some articles about all Block -1s converted into Block -2 & That JF-17B variant will be fitted with AESA Radar.

AESA TRMs require 4 - 5 watt at individual level & KLJ7A Brochure gives 4.0 KVA or 3.2 KW rated Power Consumption for 1000 TRM Configuration. Plus the AESA radar cooling air coming from aircraft’s environment control system.

Current JF-17 Thunder Squadrons :

- 2(MR) Squadron/39 (Tactical) Wing at Jacobabad/Shahbaz AB

- 14(AS) Squadron/34 (Tactical Attack) Wing at Rafiqui AB

- 16(MR) Squadron/33 (Tactical) Wing at Minhas/Kamra AB

- 26(MR) Squadron/36 (Tactical Attack) Wing at Peshawar AB

- 28(MR) Squadron/31 (Air Superiority) Wing at Quetta/Intl

- 18(OCU) Squadron/37 (Combat Training) Wing at Mianwali/PAF Base M.M. Alam

- Combat Commander School (CCS) JF-17 Squadron/Airpower Center of Excellence (ACE) at Mushaf AB

-------------------------------------------------------

The Fleet wide AESA Radar upgrade is cost intensive, So it would involve assessment of Air-frame hours left on a particular Air-frame which means the first Lot of Block -I may not be feasible at all ; Block II Production run end Air-frames are the candidates , Yet it would create a massive AESA - BVR Laden force with synergy of hardware.

It is punching above it weight considering the economy of Pakistan.

By global standards it would be considered among the stronger and more powerful air forces, although it is nothing impressive for a country as large as Pakistan. You have countries smaller with much better air forces.

April 2023 :"After inductions of J-10CP 4.5 Gen Medium class Omni role , JF-17C Thunder block -3 4.5 Gen Light Multi role and HALE Akinci UAV in succession - F-16 Modernization ÖZGÜR is the next Logical step for Pakistan Airforce."

Honestly - i can get onboard with the logic of the avionics/ew systems of ÖZGÜR on a JF17-PT (?) so that it can fully operate all Turkish platforms and weapons - but the F16s are reaching the end of their lives in PAF and have already had their MLU's, and it serves no value to upgrade them - versus procuring new platforms which is required to replace the remaining F7s/Mirages right now...

"Considering 75 +/- units fully operational with PAF , Factors such as :
- Huge costs incurred on Logistical aspects
- Spares, Training, Supply Chain
- Tactical deployment
- Networking with other Assets such as SAAB Eri eyes , Link-16
- Decent Payload capability and

- As a Link to Foreign Exercises with Western Airforces

Its still respected & feared by Arch rivals as exhibited in Swift Retort .The Avionics & Systems upgrade is preceded by airframe Life to get a Structural uplift by S.L.E.P available til 12,000 Hours. The capability additions such as AESA with extra 4000 Hours Life would make F-16s relevant for next decade.

Plus induction of increasing quantities of Thunders means rest and preservation to F-16 Fleet .
Hence PAF would leave no opportunity get-by to upgrade the F-16 fleet. So Vipers are there to stay - Just consider the case of Mirages as a case in point. "

April 2023 :

"Operations like Balakot have also demonstrated that given the political will, aerospace power can be effectively used in a no-war, no-peace scenario, under a nuclear overhang without escalating into a full-blown conflict.

This is very important, given the nature of our adversaries.

The "response options" available to the leadership have suddenly increased and increasingly, air power has become an option of choice due to inherent flexibility and unmatched precision strike capability: "

A more "Lethal" Punch is ready...!

"Unlike in era of 1990s to 2000s when PAF had limited to minimal capabilities of Platform carrying BVR Missiles, Anti Ship Long range Missiles, Stand off Air Launched Cruise Missiles, Range Extension Kits , HOBS Missiles & Anti Radiation HARM Missiles - to 2023 with Inductions of
Omni Role Semi Stealth 4.5 Generation J-10C
JF-17C Thunders 4.0+ Generation with AESA Radar
TB-2 Recon , Surviliance & armed drone
Akinci Raider with SATCOM, SAR Radar & SOM-J Cruise Missiles
The game has changed."

Despite economic hardships it looks that PAF may enter in next stage of acquiring a stealth platform well before adversary.
