Sri Lanka Economy grows 7.8% in 2013 third quarter

Atleast any one in South Asia will be developed
Congrats :yahoo:

It's about time! Every region has developed countries; East Asia, South East Asia, Oceania, Europe, North America, South America.

We need at least one, it will be good for our image as a continent. It'll show what South Asians are capable of.

Sri Lanka is "tinyyy" country with "tinyyy" population...so who cares such a poorrrrrrrrrr country yaarrr!

Yeah and the most important thing in the country is political stability. We can't afford to gamble with stability over our political affiliations. Anyway our compatriots are such idiots who almost elected a military general into power just because they were supposedly tired of "authoritarianism" LOL
Yes, political stability is indeed important.

Politic like finance, is very important in properly allocating resources. However, too much would just lead to itself levying a cost on the whole. Politicians that spend too much times fighting over who get what would not have time to get thing done.

Congrat to Sri Lanka.

Do you mean in the way that having a large public sector can be a burden on the economy?

No. Large public sector can be a burden if it is inefficient, but it is not necessary/automatically so.

Sri Lanka is extremely lucky to have such a leader. Such men don't come into power anywhere in the world often. If we let him, he will be as Lee Kuan Yew was to Singapore. He realises what it takes to build a developed country (infrastructure, education, healthcare, technology, science) and actually gets things done.

He is definitely not perfect, but if anyone can send Sri Lanka into the 21st century in any meaningful timeframe, it is him.

Please could BD borrow your President as our two ladies are complete waste of time?:D

Good going Sri Lanka. 10-15 more years of this progress and it will become a middle-income country.

The definition of a middle income is having a GDP per capita of over $4,000

low income, $1,035 or less
lower middle income, $1,036 - $4,085
upper middle income, $4,086 - $12,615
high income,$12,616 or more.

How we Classify Countries | Data

Sri Lanka`s current GDP per capita is around $3500 ( ppp $7000)

Gov`s plan is to pass $4000 by 2016...Most probably we`ll achieve that in 2015..Since we doubled our GDP per capita within last 6 years we hope$ to hit $12,000 mark (high income) in 15 years although there`s long way to go

According to this scale then BD is lower middle income.:D

I was using a scale where BD/India would be low income, Malaysia/Turkey would be middle-income and UK/Japan would be classified as high-income.

I think UK and Japan are Very high income..There should be another category called middle income where you can put countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand..(better than lower middle but not good as upper middle)

ALso i didn`t know that Bangladesh surpassed $1000 so congrats ! What is the gdp per capita there now ?

Maybe when we're done with him! It's also important once you have the right leader to have a system that gives him enough power to do his job. For example if Modi is as effective as Mahinda, I think the partisan politics of India might get in the way of him doing his job effectively. In Sri Lanka the President has a lot of power.

This brings incredible benefit under good leadership and terrible hardship under bad leadership. So it's a bit of a gamble. That's why I think it was lucky we came out on top!

Considering the favour he has with the population, and the fact that there are no limits on reelection, hopefully he can steer Sri Lanka for quite a while yet.

Sri Lanka and BD are very similar as they have one dominant ethnicity and hence are relatively easy to run. BD's useless politicians are getting in the way of rapid development. BD is capable of sustained 8-9% GDP growth a year rather than the current 6-7%.

India is finding it hard as any government has to balance the interests of so many ethnic groups and so development is rather slow. Even a Modi, if he is as good as people think he is, will not be able to make as much difference as some people think because of the Indian federal system of government - he will have to work with many state governments to implement his reforms and plans.

BD has more of an advantage in this area than Sri Lanka! BD is 98% Bengali, Sri Lanka is less than 75% Sinhalese.

But the issue shouldn't be ethnicity, it should be groups with conflicting opinions. The more divided a nation is the less strongly it can advance.
