Farakka Dam is located on the Ganges River, in the Murshidabad district of the Indian state of West Bengal, 18 km from the Chapainawabganj border with Bangladesh. The construction of this dam on the river Ganges began in 1961 and was completed in December 1974. The length of the dam is 2.24 km. It is not only a dam but this infrastructure is also used as a road and rail communication bridge.

The dam has a total of 109 gates. Water is supplied from this dam to the Farakka thermal power station. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Farakka Dam was built near the Calcutta port to wash away the silt of the Hooghly River. Hindustan Construction Company built the dam with the help of the then Soviet Union at a cost of about one billion dollars. In the video episodes in Bengali below, we will learn about Farakka Dam, a much-discussed topic of Bangladesh-India relations.

The water of the Ganga has flowed a lot in five long decades, it is irrelevant here to calculate how much India has received and how much Bangladesh has received in these years. Because Farakka Dam has not only wreaked havoc on Bangladesh, India has also started witnessing its long-term effects in upstream areas like Bihar. Due to which the question may arise, what is the fate of Farakka Barrage. How long is the life expectancy of Farakka Barrage? Let's review in these videos.

The two videos below discuss the long-term deleterious effects of the ill-thought-out Farakka barrage and because of the unilateral withdrawal of water toward Hooghly and Bhagirathi rivers to save Kolkata and Haldia ports (which actually did not happen per plan because there is even more dredging needed to save these ports than ever before).

Idiot @Bilal9, India built Farakka with its own technology and engineers. The purpose is to supply water to the Haldia/ Kolkata Port. Otherwise, navigation channel will be blocked.

I believe, being born with a cow dung brain, you have little idea what is this blockage. Learn about siltation process and the minimum water velocity necessary to desiltation.

Learn and talk.

Please tell me with so many cow dung brains in the country when BD to build something to neutralize the effects of Farakka.

Give us a few technology ideas. Can you do it? If not, just shut your smelly mouth up.

We need to build Ganges barrage with the help of China to ward off the deleterious effects within Bangladesh created by Farakka barrage.

Faraka for all practical purposes has impeded operations in Kolkata port.

Like some of the videos said, they have to do even more dredging now to keep the shipping channel navigable. It is a lost cause.

Farakka was built to use water as a political tool against the then East Pakistan now Bangladesh. I don't expect the Indian govt. to tear down Farakka barrage to mitigate the problems faced by the Indian states because of this ill thought out structure.

Bloody Mullah ka Awlad without Ukle. Can you cite one instance that a country spending a billion dollar to deprive another country of water? Bloody Pig!!!

Tell me why do our Mullah people allow all the Ganges water to go down to the BoB? Why blame India when all our brainless people go for a 16 hour prayer every day instead of using their cow dung brains to initiate a project.

Most people in BD are just fools like you who believe a 1 or 2 HP machine can irrigate a farmland.

How long you will be asking for helps from the Christians, Buddhists and now Hindus? Why Hindu India builds power stations in BD while you are waiting to die and get hooked by 72 ugly bitches?

What you said means that India built Farakka to impede the Kolkata Port operations by silting it.

Very good logical way of putting things. No wonder, with such brains why BD cannot herself solve any of the water-related issues?

Always asking India and China to help it out. Actually, your leaders cry over some non/issues to get some dollar helps from these countries.

BD remains a beggar country because it is inhabited with irresponsible people.

Why do you have to think that you dredging a river is so difficult and Islamic Angels should come back to do it? Is India as stupid as Bangladesh people?

India was right to build Farakka because the silting of Haldia was delayed by more than 50 yrs. The rate of siltation is very low because of Farakka,

A Paradise-seeker like you is not aware that when the river water level is high, sea water do not enter the river. So, agriculture does not suffer. Meritorious Indians know it very well unlike a cow dung as you are. Farakka helped the farmlands beside the river to produce more.

By the way, why dredging is a problem for non-science or non-technical man like you? Can you solve it? Indians can do it. Do not talk like vulture.

Farrakha barrage has been around before Bangladesh got created. Still there is so much water in Ganges that much of it flows into the sea without any use by Bangladesh.

Thanks for the links bhai. As everyone has seen, Farakka as a dam has failed in all its objectives - except maybe (as @saif bhai pointed out) as a tool of arm-twisting.

When Bangladesh builds another barrage 25 miles downstream of the Farakka within our borders (we definitely have the money to do this) then we will see who does the arm-twisting.

Farrakha barrage has been around before Bangladesh got created. Still there is so much water in Ganges that much of it flows into the sea without any use by Bangladesh.

Please pass informed comments after reading up about it.

@Bilal9 drinks up all the Ganges water and then demands more.

Never going out of DhKa apartment, he does not know that floods have been fully reduced in the SW BD after Farakka was built.

Please ask that imbecile how BD can now feed 180 million people if his pet Farakka has made BD a desert country like SA.

In 1971 the population was 75 million or less.

Now, that imbecile would complain to the Moderators that I am an Indian. It is because he has no valid argument to support his viewpoint. A very nasty guy’nn

The article posted below has pointed out the impact of Farakka barrage on Bangladesh.
Who cares what a newspaperman writes.

But, how come after Farakka 180 million people in BD is eating full stomach. Less than 75 million people could not be supported before Farakka was built.

So, tell me a few excuses and challenge me that the population now has been reduced to 75 million now after reaching 280 million before.

How long fat Mullahs would be crying? Answer my question and then cry, Mullah!!!!
