Why doesn't Pakistan build an aircraft carrier?

let me explain to you about the so called indian aircraft carriers

INS Viraat

Launched:16 February 1953
Commissioned:18 November 1959
Recommissioned:May 1987 (bought from UK)
Refit:April 1986, July 1999
Decommissioned:2012 (expected) from indian navy service

INS Viraat was originally commissioned in the Royal Navy as HMS Hermes on 18 November 1959. INS Viraat is a Centaur-class amphibious assault ship according to the modern aircraft carrier standards). In a wartime scenario, the INS Viraat can embark up to 18 combat aircraft

INS Vikramaditya

INS Vikramaditya is a Kiev class amphibious assault ship built in 1978-1982. It is projected to replace India's INS Viraat. Unlike American or British carriers, the Kiev class is a combination of a cruiser and a carrier. The intended mission of the Kiev class was support for strategic missile submarines.

A total of four Kiev class carriers were built and commissioned, serving in the Soviet and then Russian Navy. The first three were decommissioned, having served out their lifetimes, and have been either scrapped or sold as recreational pieces to China. The fourth ship, Admiral Gorshkov, was sold to the Indian Navy in 2004.

All reconfiguration work is being completed at Severodvinsk, Russia; however it has been delayed by three years due to underestimating the amount of cabling needed and will be commissioned by 2012. Russia will install new systems instead of repairing the old ones and the carrier will be delivered in 2010. It will then begin an eighteen month sea trial before it is commissioned in to the Indian Navy in 2012.

we desperately need an aircraft carrier to compete with India because we have 2 bring ourselves better if not then at least parallel!!!!!!!

When we have a GDP of around $2 trillion, than sure we can buy this expensive toy but right now buying an aircraft carrier would bankrupt our nation. Aircraft carriers are for those countries that have huge economies and whom deem it necessary to project power, money would be better spent if Pakistan buys top notch submarines and better frigates/destroyers.

Aircraft carriers are for offencive missions , long range power projection , they don't fit inany role for PN

Hi,

We need to educate and feed our poor rather than spend money on the carrier---aircraft carrier is not going to do much for us---our strategic location doesnot demand an a/c carrier---even if we were able to manufacture one just to show----our financial back would be broken just to keep the ship afloat.

A good quality a/c carrier would cost around 5 billon dollars alone plus accessories-----we can have over a 150---200 FC 20's, ----or 60---80 rafaels which can be used to launch long range air to ship missiles, ---maybe around 7---10 submarines---which can set up their own trap around the carrier.

Last but not least---pakistani a/c carrir would not look good to the world powers that be---so no more aid.

If Pakistan build small air bases (used only at the time of emergency or war ) near Tarbat, Gawadar, Las Bela, Thatta could be more dangerous as tactical then AC.

agreed, not to mention you would need to add the cost of acquiring and maintaining carrier escorts(basically no ships in PN can be a credible escort right now with true mulit-layered long range air and sea defense), basically in the end the capability provided by a carrier is no where near enough to justify its cost in terms of money political and other to pakistan

Hi Mzubair,

You are so correct---and then with the air refeuller tankers---we have a massive force multiplier---where loaded up planes can stay in air for a long time and then make a dash when and where neccessary.

Balochistan seems rather undefended.

Hi,

Thankyou for reminding me---I forgot about that momentarily---that would be another 4---6 billion dollar expense---just for the equipment.

you are very close to the point of winning a war If you truly understand this book《孙子兵法》.I am not saying the AC is useless, but we do not desperately need it.Chinese culture of having extensive knowledge and profound scholarship is actually based on war.it's pathetic for your army to be exposed under your enemies' eyes

《孙子兵法》>> 10 AC

兵者,诡道也。

:pakistan::china:

Why are Pakistani even debating owning an AC when China still debating owning one? Think about the costs, risks, timeline, training, investment, naval jets....

Subs, frigates, u-boats are Pakistan's answer. You don't need a cannon to swat a fly. :smitten:

Hi Suleman,

We don't mean to beat up on you---even though it may seem like---but that is how the discussions are---someone has to bring out something---so that the rest of them can open the discussion. It is your turn today---so enjoy being the center of attention---you the man

Balochistan seems rather undefended.

Pakistan never felt airial threat across Afgan/Iran areas, thats y it was ignored for Air bases, but yes there shloud be 6 to 10 small air bases.

correct. Russians called it an aircraft carrying missile cruiser (T-AKR).
