Better governance makes South India surge ahead of the North

Wrong this time mate.
South Indians covet Government jobs even more than North Indians. The difference is that they have had better literacy for a far longer period. Better literacy means better demands from politicians coupled with lesser identity issues.

But when using the term North Indians - the reference here is BIMARU states only.

The rest of North India - Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand are doing rather good in every indicator.

The problem is that UP, Bihar alone account for so high a number of people that the rest of North India's stats gets screwed because of these two states alone.

There is a saying in India - 'UP is the only State which if it wants to secede from India, the rest of India will happily let go'.

Bihar is progressing rather well under Nitish though.

Let's not forget that Western U.P is economically at par with Punjab and Haryana. It's the Eastern part which is the problem.

I don't think Rajasthan should be counted as a Bimaru state it has done better job considering most of the state is a barren desert compared to the fertile lands of UP & Bihar

Whatever!! I have never heard this term before. It's a sick name though!! I can see some economist Ashish Bose had given this name. But never heard the term coz probably it's not used much. Rather than giving names to states and discriminate we should try to work towards their prosperity.
@FaujHistorian - Yes man 200%. From the city of Kolkata. Probably by chance I never heard this sick name.

Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, joined with Pakistani Punjab were the "old punjab". That being the richest state based on its agricultural and cottage industry. So they were part of the "well to do" area.

peace

Well in India, Punjab seems to have remained with agriculture, Haryana's prosperity comes from being an Industrialized state now. Himachal Pradesh is a mixture between cottage industry and farming, its however a fast industrializing state as well.

And nick_indian is right. West UP is as prosperous as Punjab & Haryana.

Overall its UP and Bihar who are the cause of problems.

Whats sick about it? Such names are normal in economics (BRICS, TRIPS, PIGS etc)

They are simply the most backward states in India, housing the vast majority of Indias poor.

You may be unaware of it, but you just played part in the pun! The name is "sick", literally so.

Right for Rajasthan.... there's a contradictory graph shown. According to that if Rajasthan is considered then there are many more which should be considered as well.

All states are on the upward swing of improving - we might see some real miracles - something on the lines of Gurgoan from these states in a decade.

UP has many of the holiest sites of Hinduism and Buddhism so I doubt your claim

Its for fun mate. And it laments how bad the condition of UP is.

Its not as if UP will actually try to secede or the rest of Indians will allow it :)

Rest of Indians definitely won't allow the land to secede but based on my observation They would probably don't even think for a second before kicking out all the UPites and Bihari people out of India if given a chance. :P

Better governance makes South India surge ahead of the North

Bangalore: The quality of governance and better leadership has led to southern states surging ahead of their northern counterparts, widening the gap in terms of per capita income and poverty between the south and north, says a study. Per capita incomes in the south (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala) have risen fast and poverty has declined in recent years and the reason is quality of governance, better leadership and political stability, according to study conducted by the Public Affairs Centre.

As of 2009-10, on an average, the weighted per capita income in the southern states (in constant 1993-94 prices) was Rs 19,531 whereas it was only Rs 8,951 in the northern states (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh).

In 2009-10, the average (weighted) poverty rate (combined for rural and urban areas) in the southern states was 19 per cent against 38 per cent in the northern states. The picture was very different fifty years ago. The rural poverty rates in the southern states in 1960 was 66 per cent compared to 55 per cent in the Hindi heartland states, the study said.

Young people from the south were migrating to the northern towns in search of employment. Currently, the migration of southerners to the north has declined while northerners are moving in large numbers to the south in search of work, it said. Various factors have led to this turnaround over the last half century, the PAC study said.

From the time of Independence, the south has been ahead of the north in literacy, infant mortality, life expectancy, fertility rate and other factors that contribute to greater productivity. Public Affairs Centre (PAC) is a not-for-profit organisation, established in 1994 with a mandate to improve the quality of governance in India.

According to the PAC study, quality of governance and leadership was somewhat better in south as is clear from the longer tenure of chief ministers (political stability) and better law and order (lesser number of police firings, proportion of civil police, ratio of pending cases in court).

The south was also ahead in terms of technical education, tele-density, power and urbanisation. More than half of all engineering colleges in the country are in the south. Better governance facilitated these factors and enabled the state to more efficiently utilise its scarce resources.

But what happened in the south was not just a "supply side miracle" says Samuel Paul of the PAC. Social movements in the south made people more aware of the need to demand better and more equitable governance from the authorities.

Strong movements in Kerala and Tamil Nadu (the former Madras Presidency) a century ago, began to mobilise vast segments of population especially the lower castes, to push for education and job reservation in government. Governments there responded and the result was the increased spread of education, awareness, networking and entrepreneurship in the southern states, the study said.

"This in turn laid the foundation for a more inclusive growth pattern. Such social movements were absent in the north where the demand for better governance and entitlements from lower castes was absent or merely used for identity politics. When the demand was missing, the pressure on the supply side was weak too," Paul said.

CUT THE CRAP AND THINK INDIA AS ONE.....SUCH POSTS AREN'T GOING TO HELP ANYONE.

Culture in the south is "self help" and get up if you fall (relatively speaking).

Culture in the north is "government help" and entitlements (relatively speaking).

In the north, especially in BIMARU states, if something is wrong with me, I'll blame the other ethnicity, government, other religion, and god too. But heavens forbid if I have to get up or even move my finger.

peace

Well put on the highlighted -

CUT THE CRAP AND THINK INDIA AS ONE.....SUCH POSTS AREN'T GOING TO HELP ANYONE.
