Chinese Aircraft Carrier Liaoning is Bigger, More Powerful & Cheaper than India's A/C

As delays keep cropping up in the refitting of India’s aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya “gifted” by Russia, the Chinese Navy has received its first aircraft carrier, the Russian origin Liaoning which has nearly twice the aircraft and helicopter capacity of the Indian carrier.

The Liaoning is designed to carry 30 fixed wing aircraft and 24 helicopter while the Vikramaditya can carry just 16 MiG-29K aircraft and 10 helicopters.

The Chinese Navy took delivery of the refurbished ship yesterday.

The Ukrainian carrier was purchased for $20 million in 1998 by a Hong Kong-based company called Chong Lot Travel Agency Ltd. The carrier was originally intended to be a casino until Chang Lot failed to acquire a license to run an offshore casino.

In 2005, she was moved to a dry dock in China to be rebuilt. Chong Lot spent an additional $65 million transporting the ship to China. It is not known on what terms the Chinese Navy acquired the carrier from the Chang Lot gambling company and how much it spent on refitting it.

In contrast, India acquired the Admiral Gorshkov (rechristened INS Vikramaditya) carrier for free as a “goodwill gesture” from Russia in 2008 but spent over $1 billion in a refurbishing contract given to the Russian shipyard. Negotiations to acquire the carrier had begun 5-7 years ago. China however, chose to rely on its own industries to rebuild the ship formerly known as the Varyag. China has been able to maintain complete secrecy about the indigenous equipment and systems it has installed in the carrier.

The only information in the public domain is that the Chinese carrier has been equipped with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) and Sea Eagle radars and weapons such as the Type 1030 CIWS main gun, and the FL-3000N missile system.

The old anti-ship missile tubes have been plugged and are not expected to be used in an effort to free up internal space for storage.

However, it is not yet known if China has put together a fleet of aircraft and pilots for carrier operations. According to China's Rear Admiral Yang Yi quoted in the Chinese media, the carrier will be used "for scientific research and training missions" in an effort to build "a more advanced aircraft carrier platform in the future".

In anticipation of the Vikramaditya it has begun inducting MiG-29K naval fighter jets that will operate in STOBAR (short take-off but assisted recovery via arresting wires) mode. While the aircraft and helicopters are ready, the final deliver date of the carrier keeps getting postponed due to technical difficulties.

rumor said the second and third indeginous 70000 tons carriers will be launched at 2015.

Why Russia installed anti-ship missiles on a carriers? quite confused

i think the chinese navy will use it as a helicopter carrier untill their pilots and j-15's fleet is fully ready to take on.

Its only a matter of time before the chinese master operating AC. The realize the need for it and have paid good attention to it.
No one should discount this carrier by calling it a casino or training AC.

I think India can do better than letting the Russians refit the Gorshkov. I don't quite understand why India does not ask Russia to build a new Kuznetsov Class from scratch. Alternatively, India could buy Gorshkov and try to refit by their own engineers. Yes India may encounter lots of difficulties in the process, but these are valuable experiences that can be used for India' indigenous AC.

It's not possible. If you know Indian shipyard. You will know they have not choice but to bite the bullet and ask Russia to do the refit. Unless India start to invest billions in shipyard facilities. But that will mean waiting for another 10 years.

Even the indigenuous carrier is just bull. The work has stopped as they encounter difficulties.

Since they have an ambitious indigenous AC program, it is necessary for them to get the basic infrastructure ready first. If the infrastructure is not ready, then better postpone the program altogether. It always seems to me that refitting an existing AC is much easier, and despite the difficulties encountered during refitting, it will actually speed up the whole program.

Nevertheless, if the shipyard facilities are not ready for India to refit the Gorshkov, they could still do better by asking the Russians to build a new Kuznetsov class AC.

If you have some knowledge and know some history of Soviet Union. Russia shipyard quality is even worst than China. The shipyard that can build large ship is at Ukraine. After Soviet collaspe, Ukraine inherit the facilities. Ever heard of Russia needed to buy Mistral LHD from France? That already show you the pathetic state of Russia shipyard.

Ask Russia to build another Kuznetsov??? That is impossible. Unless they too start investing billions to upgrade their shipyard.

Thats not the case mate india do have some of the very good shipyard and if you see the modernization program of indian navy they are procuring 75% of the ships developed indigineously. Offcourse the AC's technology is complex and difficult but we are developing one and its very hard and time consuming process to make one of the best in the world from scrap. India is using russian tech from a very long time and gorshkov could have given india world's best tech over a short time but unfortunatly that did'nt happend exactly that way.

is it a India based website? cause i haven't seen a foreign (not south asian, not the seller Russia) news agency would bring up a specific Indian weapon system in their article.

If things go according to the schedule, then we will probably get to see glimpses of them later on in 2013.
