Modernizing Pakistani air defenses

If the usaf had the choice, they would opt for more A 10's, but they don't have a voice in matter any more. The a 10 has performed beyond their wildest expectations---for that reason this plane will be made to fly as long as it is mechanically possible for the usaf.

A-10 is good only in area where you have air superiority, else it is a flying duck!
It is rather an overkill for blowing things on ground for a nation like,say Pakistan. USAF wanted to muster whatever it can to handle Soviet Armour. Hence it is worth only for USAF.

so true. A-10 is just a bomb-truck. Its payload of 16 000lbs aint that extraordinary either. you can get a payload of 8 tonnes with the panavia tornado. the tornado is also supersonic and capable of defending itself against other planes
 
The only thing about the HQ-9/FT-2000 is that it is inferrior to SAM systems of other cunteries. And only a few systems entered service with PLA so I would chose another system instead of the HQ-9.

So depending on PM budget I rather go for something like Aster 30 it's performance is far superior.

One more question what is COIN?

1. COIN, is for Counter Insurgency

2. The adorable thing of A-10, aircraft is not its dreadful array of weapons, including 30 mm cannon, rather its ability to survive in heavy odds. Its vital parts are protected against small arms fire. It has double back up system for Hydraulic Flight Controls. The design of engine, offers highly favourable condituins to survive against IR SAMs. Thats why, US pilots love this aircraft, as they believe, no matter, to what extent it is damaged, this aircraft would still bring them back home.

3. I agree, with Sir Blain2, that we require attack helicopters in operations at our western borders. Army is potently employing cobra helicopters. we nedd more of these machines.

4. As of Pakistani Air Defence, i believe, PAF Air Defence Network is fully intergrated and prompt, against any intruder aircraft. However, Pakistan lacks, in having any credible anit-missile missile system. Though this trait is enjoyed by very few in the world; we, having balistic missiles, should plan to aquire system to defend against ballistic missiles.
 
It is true that Pakistan does need a system to protect agianst missiles Blackwater but it would be very expensive and there are only a hand full of counteries that have that kind of capability. It would be better for us to get a system that could protect our nuclear and economical assets. Maybe will be able to get something like the Bamse RBS23 All-Weather Air Defence Missile it is really good. It is a mobile system that can be transported anywhere by aircraft it is all weather and can take out air to ground targets.

You have a wrong assessment of the A 10. It is not just a bomb truck---it is a very high quality and sophisticated bomb truck, built for the purpose. Its slow speed is its greatest asset to hit ground targets. Its titanium bath tub to protect the pilot---its engine location---this thing can basically tear up a couple of company strength of tanks in no time. For ground attack aircraft, slower is always better. It has been a proven platform against enemy armour

The helicopters are no match or replacements for an A 10, because they don't have the legs---.

Pakistan will face the similiar threat if it does---indian armour will be in same proportion as russian was to the nato.

I agree sir but PAF have always opted for a multirole platform due to our limited resources. However i personally was always of an opinion that if army too could have an aviation unit of fixed wing aircraft such as the A-10 which could be used to reinforce the existing Cobras giving us a robust capability against anytype of land threat and also against militants in the tribal areas.
Its just my two cents.

Pakistan indeed opts for a multirole aircraft---it was because of its shortsighted approach---but if the PAF would have known about the ground strike capability of the A 10 and would have known where the future wars were headed towards, they would have purchased a sqdrn and a half of these planes.

Remember---PAF is always playing a catch up game---either by choice or by force. GW1 showed us that we did need a dedicated ground attack aircraft.
 
Pakistan has already ordered spada 2000 system. Airforce 2008 calendar has an image of it. I think this should plug the gap existing to some level. It is an efficient system.

Spada 2000 Advanced Air Defence System, Italy

The Spada 2000 is an all-weather, day and night, highly automated, air defence system developed by MBDA (formerly Alenia Marconi Systems). The system has quick reaction time and requires very few operators to man the system. The unit can operate independently or can be integrated with national air defence centres. Spada 2000 is in production and in service with Spanish Air Forces.

The Spada 2000 is an upgraded version of the Spada air defence system providing significant operational and technological improvements, including increased firepower and range, and the capability of coordinating additional anti-air weapons.

"The Spada 2000 is an all-weather, day and night, highly automated, advanced air defence system."In March 2007, Kuwait ordered the upgrade of its Aspide missile systems to Aspide 2000 / Spada 2000 configuration.

The system provides air defence missile coverage of 2,000km². Target detection and tracking range is up to 60km and the missiles can intercept crossing and approaching targets to a range of 25km. The kill probability is high, even against highly agile crossing targets. The system can engage up to four targets simultaneously with Aspide missiles.

CONFIGURATION

Spada 2000 is modularised and integrated into sheltered units, which provides a high tactical and strategic mobility. The system consists of a detection centre and either two or four firing sections, each section equipped with two missile launchers. Each missile launcher has six ready to fire Aspide 2000 missiles.

DETECTION CENTRE

The detection centre contains mission planning capability allowing fast and precise effective deployment of the weapons. The centre is fitted in a hardened shelter with an RAC-3D radar installed on a hydraulically operated mast on the roof of the shelter. The shelter houses the system's operating centre, including the voice and data communications suite.

Auxiliary equipment in the centre includes a global positioning system, a north finder, air conditioning and power supplies.

RAC-3D RADAR

Aspide 2000's radar is the Selex Sistemi Integrati (formerly Alenia Marconi Systems) RAC-3D, which gives three-dimensional volumetric air surveillance, detection and tracking. The system has the capacity to track 100 targets simultaneously within a range of 60km.

The radar is capable of operating in hostile electronic warfare environments and is robust against clutter interference and electronic countermeasures. The radar features emission control, jamming location, random frequency agility and coded waveforms. The radar's erectable antenna is up to 13m in height.

OPERATIONS CENTRE

The operations centre is manned by two operators for mission planning, system deployment and management during combat operations. The computer displays the air threat data in 3D coordinates.

The system tracks, identifies and prioritises the targets and assigns the firing sections to the priority targets. The targets can also be assigned to other anti-air weapon systems. The system is able to coordinate up to ten small anti-air weapons deployed within a 10km radius.

The operations centre can be connected to a remote upper level air defence command centre.

The firing section consists of the tracking and illumination radar, the control unit and the missile launchers each with six ready-to-fire missiles. The radar carries out target acquisition, tracking and illumination functions for missile guidance.

The control unit is managed by a single operator. The unit controls all the functions from target designation to missile launch and target intercept and operates in manual or automatic mode.

COMMUNICATIONS

The communications suite includes the data links between the detection centre and the firing sections and also internal and external secure voice communications.

MISSILE

The Aspide 2000 missile is an upgraded version of the Aspide surface-to-air missile. The missile is capable of engaging hostile attack aircraft before the aircraft can release airborne standoff weapons. The Aspide 2000 is also capable of intercepting air-launched missiles once launched. The upgraded missile uses an enhanced single-stage rocket motor which provides increased missile speed, higher lateral acceleration and effective range.

The missile is also in service with the Italian Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force as part of the Oerlikon Contraves Skyguard air defence system.

The high-thrust single-stage solid-propellant rocket motor provides high supersonic speed and high agility to intercept manoeuvring targets. The guidance system is semi-active radar homing.

wasn't pakistan supposed to get full ToT on air defense system? I remember reading pakistan rejected deals, mainly from europe, that didn't offer ToT. can someone enlighten me?

A-10 would be good in a COIN operation, but in an Indo-pak scenario, it'll be a liability. the PAF will have o send fighters to escort the A-10. if A-10 flies without escort, its a turkey shoot for IAF.
