'More poor' in India than Africa

The new measure of poverty assesses household poverty Eight Indian states account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African countries combined, a new measure of global poverty has found.

The Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, have 421 million "poor" people, the study found.

This is more than the 410 million poor in the poorest African countries, it said.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures a range of "deprivations" at household levels.

Developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UN support, it will feature in the upcoming UNDP Human Development Report.

The measure assess a number of "deprivations" in households - from education to health to assets and services.

"The MPI is like a high resolution lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of challenges facing the poorest households," said OPHI director Dr Sabina Alkire.

Sorry kid!!

Sounds like some brain-washing and the said "militant" has only done some tough talking not any act of violence.

Anyway this is for courts to decide. The said LeT suspects have not resisted any arrest, no evidence has come forward that they were the ones that sent people to attack Mumbai.

LET is a banned militant organisation blamed for 26/11 along with other acts there is plenty of evidence just witness the david headley confession or the voice recordings directed from Pakistan telling the gunmen where the hostages are in the Taj hotel.

Unreported World is granted rare access to the Pakistan headquarters of what the US and UN say is a front organisation for one of the world's biggest terrorist networks, and the organisation behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

While the group says it's a charity set up to help the poor, reporter Evan Williams talks to insiders, government ministers and terrorism experts to investigate the truth about an organisation that has expanded its activities from Kashmir to attacking western targets outside Pakistan.

Williams and director Will West begin their journey in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province. They have a meeting with Asadullah, a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba - 'The Army of the Righteous'. The terrorist organisation has been directly blamed for the Mumbai attacks that killed 173 people, and a string of other deadly attacks in India. Asadullah tells Williams he and 26 friends fought in Kashmir, but he was the only one who survived.

Lashkar's terrorist activities led to it being banned in Pakistan. But the United Nations says it is now operating in the country under a new name - Jamaat-ud-Dawa - and the UN continues to view it as a terrorist front organisation. JuD claims it is no more than an Islamic charity, and denies it is a front for Lashkar and its terrorism.

Williams and West travel to a village on the outskirts of Lahore. It was once a Lashkar military training camp, but now it is the JuD headquarters. They've been granted very rare access to the organisation's facilities.

Opponents claim that this centre is used to raise funds that are then channelled into terrorism - a claim denied by JuD. Senior members of the organisation, together with a government official, show the team around, stressing the charitable work they say they carry out, including providing medical care and education for thousands of nearby villagers.

Their spokesperson says that supplies are donated by supportive businesses across Pakistan. He also says that India was behind the decision to label the group a terrorist organisation, and that it is completely separate to Lashkar. However, the group's leaders get jumpy at growing disquiet with the team's presence, telling Williams and West that they can no longer guarantee their safety. The team is then escorted out of the compound.

Back in Lahore, Williams talks to one of the country's most authoritative writers, Ahmed Rashid. He says that every time Lashkar has come under pressure, it changes its name and closes its bank accounts, before opening up a new office and new account and reappearing in a new light. He claims everyone still calls Jamaat-ud-Dawa Lashkar-e-Taiba because that's what they are.

The team follows up this claim in a meeting with Rana Sanaullah Khan, Punjab's Law Minister, and asks him why, when the rest of the world says Jamaat-ud-Dawa is a front for terrorism, the Pakistani government tolerates them. Khan says that, although many people in JuD do good work, it's not just a charity. He claims that some JuD people are carrying out terrorist activities in Kashmir, but that he fears that if the organisation was banned, it would respond with a wave of suicide attacks.

The strength of the organisation is clear when the team visits the group's main mosque, which, a spokesman says, on a good day has up to 10,000 people.

To hear another view on why JuD is allowed to continue in Pakistan, Unreported World meets the former intelligence chief who was responsible for setting up many of Pakistan's militant groups. Hamid Gul is now retired but remains politically involved in the struggle for Kashmir.

He tells Williams that if Islamist militants triumph in neighbouring Afghanistan, a new wave of radicalised fighters will turn their attention to Kashmir. 'There will be uprising in Kashmir, massive uprising,' he says. 'Maybe it will lead to an armed conflict between the two countries - and then the Jihadis will be the right arm of the Pakistan army.'

Now they only just have to fake a Mumbai Part 2 and some more Pakistan bashing might secure them 50b ;)

Sarkozy... lol... He is considered a hyperactive clown by most French that I know... Someone should tell him to shut up...

Welcome to the anti Pakistan bandwagon... idiot

'Indian money' thats a nice excuse PAkistanis have been using for anyone who scolds Pakistan!

Excuse me, that dwarf is in no position to scold anyone let alone Pakistan, i think they need reminding of our effort on the western front...

LeT is easy they are not fighting Pakistan. No LeT camp exists in Pakistan, the Lahore HQ's pictures were posted all over the world and its filled with Computer labs and medicine dispensaries - oh and its not LeT, its JuD.

Agreed, there are many arguments that they are one and the same, but they were arrested, they were tried - there was no conviction for lack of evidence.

If you have any evidence, any money trail any link at all suggesting that JuD is involved in violent terrorism then let us know too.

It is easy to label any spot where there is a congregation of big bearded men, but another case to prove it. We are not doing an operation against LeT because all the suspected people in Pakistan have never resisted arrest.

Others like JeM and LeJ have all been hunted down now and then. Of course we are also busy fighting much bigger terrorist organizations only so much can be dedicated to all areas.

Are you for real? LeT is a banned organization by UN and even Pakistan but yet it's leader the 26/11 mastermind is living and operating freely in Pakistan

Okay forget about him what about Syed Salluddin or Maulana Masood, both are Indian nationals and dreaded terrorists. Masood was released from an Indian prison in Afghanistan and today he is freely living, operating, recruiting and holding rallies in Pakistan

He a dreaded terrorist, he was released from an Indian prison in front of the whole world and today he is your guest, may I ask why?

Its surprising little bit " lip service" made them earn billions of dollar. The whole protocol need one line in India , condemn Pakistan and spray some fire on terrorism allegation and that's about it. Put billions in pocket and back home. A simple formula of success. Minds are still trap in white skin.

2 things.

1) Do you have evidence that we are protecting people from Haqqani's network? I don't think anyone serious has ever even debated that as a point. Inaction cannot be translated to protection.

2) About attacking the other groups... Then who will go and fight the Taliban? Everybody has to be fought and we are the ones who have to do the fighting. We have to get those primarily who have an aim to fight with us first, crush them so that our assets can be freed to fight others.

Well "fighting" militancy can be controlled by more than just allocating troops to the cause....

Maybe preventing the open "fund drives" by militants such as Hafeez Saeed and JUD and curbing their hate speeches aimed at promoting terror are moves that dont require much effort....

But clearly there is no motivation to do this in Pakistan.....so yes inaction in this case can be translated into protection since Pakistani vested interests are at stake..

Excuse me, that dwarf is in no position to scold anyone let alone Pakistan, i think they need reminding of our effort on the western front...

It will do you better to criticize his policies and actions than draw attention to his "napoleanesque stature"....

Calling him a dwarf only makes your argument look weak....

See the problem is that we want to keep our patriotism irrespective of logic....You are saying that French are taking billions from India but are they getting it for free???? These are deals and are going to bring us more benefit....We are no fools who will give away our hard earned money just like that...Even you know it but as said patriotism stops you from saying the obvious...

Now regarding the confrontation then do you see a pattern here??? Let's assume this is nothing but a lip service(which is wrong though)....but there was not even a lip service a decade back, no???...In other words status quo is moving in our favor(even if by a fraction).... India is gaining more and more support from west viz-a-viz Pakistan...From geo-politics perspective this is not good news for Pakistan....Yes they have a dependency on Pak due to WOT but things have the potential to change dramatically on ground.....India due to her newly found economic might is getting all what she needs - Robust economy to political weight....

To conclude more and more of this so called lip service less and less bracketing of India-Pak...If you impartially analyze events from civilian nuclear deal to permanent seat in UNSC - so called lip service is helping us a lot....

I could agree with this part of your argument,

This part is not so correct.
Sure India is gaining money, and the economy is becoming stronger and stronger. but may i ask on what ground ?

Has India become a production economy like China ?
Had India become a hi tech IPR economy like the west is ?
Or do you equate india's economy to the IBMs and Shell and Chevron business model.

None of the above,
India is a service based economy, which still relies on agriculture to a large extent.
Which inturn makes Indian economy dependent on the western economy to keep fueling it.

The west is in a crunch already, and the countries which majorly contribute to Indian revenue unfortunately have their balls stuck in a vice which Pakistan is in a position to mess up.

So sure, you can celebrate the fact that you are buying now, however I see the East India company parallel coming soon.

As for the french, well Pakistan just caused him a MAJOR embarrassment for the Submarine deals and the kick back involved.

The french courts want answers from him.

He has all the right to take it out on Pakistan, and what better place to do it than India and that too while making money !

Cheers.

PS: Having personally done business with french, trust me any dollar transaction they make, some thing rotten not far away.

I could agree with this part of your argument,
Great!!!

This part is not so correct.
See my overall point was that even if these western countries are doing lip service their comments cannot be ignored....Because they were not even doing this lip-service a decade back....Rest you have made some good points so even though a little OT yet i will respond.....

Sure India is gaining money, and the economy is becoming stronger and stronger. but may i ask on what ground ?

Here is my take on Agriculture sector :

I can understand that a typical notion about developing economies is that they are based on Agriculture....This might be true when developing economies are in their infancy but no more true for economies like India/China.....Mind it i am not saying Agriculture is not important for us, our PM has recently mulled another green revolution however it is not as important as portrayed...This is a good read

Indian Economy 2010, Current Indian Economy, Indian Economic Growth, Global Economy Statistics, International Economics News, India vs USA Economy.

Just to highlight our GDP from agriculture is 17% compared with 20% Manufacturing sector and bulk is from service sector....

About Manufacturing hub vs Service hub :

Please don't underestimate the importance of service sector in today's world. Conventional wisdom is that one needs to be a manufacturing hub to be a robust economy...This is not very true in the global world that we are living in today.....Just to hightlight its importance here is an excerpt from the article i am sharing with you...

Service sector is the lifeline for the social economic growth of a country. It is today the largest and fastest growing sector globally contributing more to the global output and employing more people than any other sector.

Service Sector in India - Service Industry India, Indian Service Sector

B/W we are not ignoring the Manufacturing world as well....Growth in the manufacturing sector is quite good ... Here is an expert from the article i am sharing with you(though a little old yet drives the point i am making)....

Across India, total exports — mostly manufactured goods — are rising at an annual clip of 26 percent, according to the Commerce Ministry. The manufacturing sector is growing at 9.4 percent annually, compared with 6 percent a year from 1991 to 2004, according to the Finance Ministry.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/19/business/worldbusiness/19factory.html

Conclude : To conclude all i want to say is that service sector is very important aspect in today's world. Having said that we are not loosing our focus from Agriculture Sector as well as Manufacturing sector....Trillions of dollar that India is planning to invest in next 5 years on infrastructure is a testamount to what i just said...So there are very good signs that Indian economic model is working fine and will continue doing well for a considerable amount of time...Of-course there will always be scope of improvements and we are working on them....

Which inturn makes Indian economy dependent on the western economy to keep fueling it.

See i don't know what will happen in future...All we can do is predict with the best possible financial tools available to us right now....If we go by them then India is an internal driven economy....Our 1 billion consumer market is too huge to be run by western economy...Very minimal impact of global recession on Indian economy is a testamount to what i said....Our biggest strength is our young, talented and comparatively cheaper workforce.....This is not going to change and with west opening doors to advanced technology things are looking very promising for our economy....

The west is in a crunch already, and the countries which majorly contribute to Indian revenue unfortunately have their balls stuck in a vice which Pakistan is in a position to mess up.

I am not ignoring the situation in WOT...All i am saying is that things are changing....Countries which prefer to keep mum are openly questioning Pakistan's safe terror heaven's. Whether this brings in any change on ground is a separate discussion but at the minimum it leaves you with less bargaining power....Such statements are not good for Pakistan and her geo-politics weightage.......China cannot help you all the time, you need your own might to have a good say in international matters(atleast relating to Pakistan)...

So sure, you can celebrate the fact that you are buying now, however I see the East India company parallel coming soon.

Look i am not sure what exactly you are referring to but today's India is not as gullible as she was in 19th centuary.....However as said what will happen in future can at best be estimated based on current available tools....More and More engagement of west with India will interlock the economies of both the parties with a slight edge to India purely because of her 1 billion plus consumer market....

As for the french, well Pakistan just caused him a MAJOR embarrassment for the Submarine deals and the kick back involved. The french courts want answers from him.He has all the right to take it out on Pakistan, and what better place to do it than India and that too while making money !

Well if what you are saying is correct than certainly it is not good diplomacy from Pakistan to say the least...You don't want to make enemy with head of a powerful state like France....Diplomacy is all about increasing number of your friends, no????

PS: Having personally done business with french, trust me any dollar transaction they make, some thing rotten not far away.

You might be right...However we have been dealing with French from quite sometime now....By now we must have learned a trick or two.....
