What's new

LCA Tejas Engines failed during high-altitude trials in Leh

What's the problem? The LCA can't operate at Leh? Leh is at 10,000 ft whereas the service ceiling of the Tejas is 50,000 ft with the same engine! So what's the problem? Is it inadequate power-to-weight ratio for take off or poor lift coefficient whilst landing, translating to greater TO/landing speed on available length of the runway?

The LCA is constructed of aluminium-lithium alloys, carbon-fibre composites (C-FC), and titanium-alloy steels. The Tejas employs C-FC materials for up to 45% of its airframe by weight. Composites are used to make an aircraft both lighter and stronger at the same time compared to an all-metal design, and the LCA's percentage employment of C-FCs is one of the highest among contemporary aircraft of its class, making the plane much lighter.

But with a thrust/weight ratio of 1.07, it still can't operate at Leh? Or am I missing something here? By the way, the F-22 has a T/W ratio of 1.09. Not much difference.

In Rarified Atmosphere ATF JP-4/JP-6 is difficult to start engine.

Even mki engines failed for the first time so far I heard. They just need to modify little bit for take off and landing. Not a big issueat all.

I think this already been taken care

So it means delayed till 2020...

When is the IOC -2 expected.. ?

This is very old news. The issue was highlighted and after this issue DRDO, defense minister and various stake holders in this project stated that IOC2 will be happening on time as scheduled.

So take new with pinch of salt and rest assured IOC2 will not be delayed, unless there is something big comes up in next month or two.

Respected Sir,
We are all adults and we must think in this manner. Since the MMRCA competition had been started we have seen that Saab, BAE and Dassault have open up their offices in India in order to better out reach to the IAF and INAF too. So do you think that all of three will easily go away without having any final deals...???

Not just wait to see Rafale but also Grippen and Typhoon soon...

Scrap this obsolete lca project that we are hearing since 1970's...admit that you can't do it...it is not apiece of cake building a flyable fighter jet...its not necessary that you have to compete with Pakistan in this field...instead of burning money go buy something useful or use it for reducing your poverty level of 65%.

Woh hamri impala pe kaseede kaste hain, bhool gaye zalim ki woh baite hain ek pahiye ki bailgari pe ...
hamri impala ko budhi gadri kanahte hai ...... chalo Dill bahalane ke liye SMS khyaal achcha ahi!!

apna ghar to inse smbhalta nahi sari duniya me kashkol uthaye firte hain aur hame ghurbat kam kerne ki naseehat de rahe hain he he he wah ji wah kya ajeeb log hain ye

any way why scrap LCA its good enof to give decent point defence for indian air space and keep owr house safe while big eagels like MKI, MIG29 & M2K and FGFA take the fight to enemies air space

and one more thing LCA was is developed as the second line of defence so why will we need to place it on high altitude air bases we can use it from bases in the northen planes

Sir jee aap tu bare jaldi khafa hogae hu...baat tu asey kar rahe hu k tum loag sonay ke mahal me reh rahey ho....

Kya ye khula tazad nahe hae k LCA se sahee gup bana le hae...No doubt its a good platform for IAF but when will those pilots have a chance to fly it really... IAF should have inducted a few squadrons in last decade...

Another Delay ...........

Is that a real Problem for India, what about other jets aren't they enough for combat ?

kya zulm kerte ho huzoor mai aur aap se naraz :no:nahi saeenj ye baat nahi humne kab kaha ki hamare yahan dhoodh aur shehed ki nehre beh rahi hain hum apni aukat jante hain isiliye jo haath me hai use aur behter kerna chahte hain taki mushkil waqt me hame kissi ki taraf aas bhari nazar se nahi dehkna pare ;)

rahi baat IAF ki aur LCA me delay ki to iski sabse bari vajoohat hai IAF ke har waqt badalte hue paymane per fir bhi LCA ne sabhi poore ker ke dikha diye ek aad kami to har kisi platform me hoti hai yahan tak ki chaand me bhi daag hain kyon:azn:

'LCA Tejas likely to be ready for operational service by 2015' | Business Standard

The much-delayed indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas aircraft is expected to be ready for induction into operational service by 2015, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said today.

Talking to reporters, the IAF chief said the indigenous aircraft will have to be modified further for operating in high-altitude areas as recently during trials in Leh, its engine "did not work".

"By my estimate it (the Initial Operational Clearance II) should be by the end of this year and the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) should take another year-and-half more," he said on the sidelines of a seminar.
The FOC is the final nod required before an aircraft is considered to be ready for operational deployment in an air force. While the IOC I of the LCA Tejas was completed two years ago, but the FOC date has been postponed due to certain issues.
Browne said delays do take place in a development project such as the LCA. "Recently we went for high-altitude trials. The engine (of LCA) did not work at that altitude because it is a different cup of tea. Even the Su-30, when it was taken to Leh, it had to be modified. So, the LCA will have to be modified. It has to do the retrials," he said.

The IAF chief said the aircraft will take part in the exercise 'Ironfist', which will be held at Pokharan in Rajasthan on February 22.

"There it will be firing the R-73 missile along with laser guided bombs etc. But a lot more work is still required," he said.

Earlier at an international seminar here, DRDO chief V K Saraswat said the LCA had completed 2,000 test flights.

At the same seminar, Browne said the IAF is planning to induct around 350-400 aircraft in the 12th Defence Plan period.

The air force is planning to procure more than 200 fighter aircraft including the 126 Rafale medium-multirole combat aircraft, over 40 Su-30MKIs, several types of transport aircraft and various choppers, he said.

Listing the major modernisation milestones achieved by the air force, he said the IAF signed 325 contract worth Rs 1.52 lakh crore for modernising the force.

"Of these, 217 contracts worth around Rs 84,000 crore have been signed with Indian companies," the IAF chief said.

In 2013-14, the IAF is planning to sign several deals including one for 126 Rafale aircraft, additional six C-130J Super Hercules and several chopper contracts for attack and heavy-lift category, he said.

On the future requirements of the force, he said advanced active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars, electronic warfare suites and unmanned combat aerial vehicles were the need of the force in the future.

The IAF chief said testing facilities of DRDO and defence PSUs should be opened up for private sector as they are national assets.

Thanks for info

This country India has been working on their outdated fighter LCA for 30 years
Pathetic :coffee:

yep still able to developing , unlike china which ask Russian designers to design it attack helicopter and then claimed to world , look it Chinese design , which russian told you we designed it you fool and not you. Stolen design of Russian planes with russian engine. this is called pathetic and height of fantasy.

And unlike China JF-17 has stopped production because it failed and when it was inducted it cant fire missiles and also didn't able to fly in night.

I think the engine failed because they didn't have a World Class Mechanical Engineer like @Ayush or a World Class Finance Professional like @Dillinger associated with the Project ! :)

To serve as tea boys !

' @Hyperion @Secur @Marshmallow @Aeronaut !

Dont worry bro, these are just teething problems, they will be sorted out quickly and our LCA will be ready for combat by 2113 thoda aur samay do hamey :taz:
