Since the judicial inquiry has been unable to identify people responsible, it is time we step forward. We killed Saleem Shahzad. If you read the report carefully, it lays the blame on us. It blames us for doubting the country’s intelligence agencies for the murder of a journalist, because of course, they can never be held in doubt, let alone be responsible, or worse be at fault.

Let me explain: the most consistent feature of the report is perhaps the way in which it attacks Ali Dayan Hasan, of Human Rights Watch (HRW), and Hameed Haroon for being responsible for ‘casting’ doubts on the country’s intelligence agency. Following the failure of the judicial commission in identifying culprits involved in Saleem Shahzad’s murder, the HRW released a report, demanding the government to take every step possible to identify the culprits and that the judicial commission appeared fearful of confronting the ISI.

The claims of the HRW aren’t unsubstantiated and it has documented these incidents. They can be substantiated by the stories of the missing people, the condition of the Adiala eleven detainees; there are innumerable instances to support these claims. Yet, instead of taking note of the concerns of human rights organisations, The ISPR did what it always does most effectively, demonise the critic, cast doubt on their integrity and — in this instance *— resort to not-so-veiled threats. Its press release said: “With this press release, HRW appears to have seriously jeopardised the bipartisan and objective nature of its work. It will be in fitness of things to expect HRW to withdraw this biased statement…”

Not denying its right to refute claims alleging the ISI’s involvement, the harsh language and the demand of withdrawal reflects uneasiness and anger of being held accountable or criticised. The situation begs to ask a simple question: If a man leaves a note naming people responsible in case of his death, is abducted and killed in a pattern known to be signatory of the accused, and a judicial inquiry fails to name the culprit, what are human rights activists, people in general or the media supposed to deduce?

The fact that a culture of complete lack of accountability of certain institutions is perhaps responsible for the perception that there is more to it than meets the eye in the case of the murdered journalist. Now, if those who brought forward evidence of harassment are being held responsible, we must step forward and accept equal responsibility. We are at fault, for not demanding that the ISI focus on counter terrorism and intelligence, rather than chasing journalists and human right activists, and for always believing and helping propagate the fallacy that demanding accountability is akin to demonising our soldiers and overlooking their sacrifices, and for not questioning when we ought to be and for isolating those that do.

The light is at the end of the tunnel is a deception unless we own up to our mistakes and vow to mend them.

If the guns are being blazed at human rights activists and media heads for helping the judicial inquiry with the evidence they had, if their integrity is being put at stake, if they are being blamed for seeking justice, then the least we can do is support them, step up, lest they be isolated.

True. ISI's Ubiquity in Pakistan's various internal crises is amazing.

It's become like a string through which the puppet masters in PA control the puppets in Pakistan.

None of the world's intelligence agencies that I'm aware of is involved in such shady affairs inside its own borders.

As per the judgement report, C'mon, the judge had to worry for his own life and the life of his family members too.

I mean Saleem Shahzad is gone, you want the judge to be gone too?

Do not worry for us.....you are sitting in US and india......foucus on CIA crimes in iraq and afghaistan .....and capt jack you know better that what RAW is doing in Kashmir and other area of india............we know what we do....This human tendency to look for outer causes for our moods is the greatest addiction on our planet

CIA is not doing its operations inside the US killing journos
RAW is not killing Indians or silencing journalists...only terrorist activities and counter intelligence is being done by them and that too outside India.(Arundhaty roy would not be alive if they did what you are claiming)
ISI is supposed to have its operations abroad...but it has spread its tentacles inside Pakistan than actually foccusing abroad...it has never analysed the country's interest / only its own interests have been taken care of...otherwise it would not have allowed so much terrorism to develop which is destroying your country today...all that it has done is take care of its own and the military's interest

The saddest thing is some Pakistani members are supporting and even appreciating ISI for those shameful activities so they just prove a point to Indian members. I hope in real they know they are feeding a Frankenstein. Today it's Saleem tomorrow it could be anyone.

On 9/11: 4 hijackings took place bypassing ICTS while "'terrorist' could not even operate a cessna152" but still managed to switch off transponders, fly the plane freely, intruded several airspaces without any intercept while the F16's were scrambled in opposite direction towards atlantic... 25 or so intelligence agencies and had no idea what was going on, you got to be kidding me

Do you want me to continue, Solomon???

Don't jump the gun, mate. Continue like this, and the crying will eventually be done by your lot.

...crying about what Pakistan could have become and what you made it become.

But it will be too late by then.

If ISI did it then Im damn happy about it traitors should be dealt with iron fist .

Long Live ISI and Pak Army

What's the difference between you and Mumtaz Qadri and his supporters?

----------

And don't get me wrong, guys, as an Indian, nothing could possibly make me happier than Pakistan making steady headway on the road to self-destruction, just like what you guys are saying and supporting with such vigour.

However, I think you can do better than that.

@ Solomon2

Pakistan is one of the few muslim countries where freedom of speech exists...this is someone's personal opinion...however the state agencies should not try to hinder work of journalists..if this happened then Supreme Court of Pakistan is responsible for bringing those responsible for this to justice.

If at all ISI, or for that matter any intelligence agency wanted to remove any person from the scene, I am sure they have many discreet ways of doing that, especially in today’s world. No intelligence agency in world would through away a tortured body of anyone not to mention a journalist who is allegedly under their custody or for that matter is writing against them openly.

Just a food for though
