China backs India's bid for UNSC seat

BEIJING: In what is seen as a significant trade-off, China on Monday said it would back India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.

According to TV reports, India in return, has agreed to respect its neighbour’s claim on Taiwan.

Reports further state that Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has said that both the countries have decided to move forward on border issue.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is currently in China, said, “We have agreed to deepen military cooperation with China.”

Earlier, government sources indicated that they were expecting a resolution of the fresh irritants on border issue during talks that national security adviser and special representative for the boundary talks, M K Narayanan, will hold with Dai Bingguo, the Chinese pointsperson.

The subject, unlike the border issue, featured in the discussion the PM had with Wen at the dinner hosted by the Chinese premier on Sunday. Significantly, Wen refrained from any mention of the criteria-based approach that the Chinese had harped on to contest America’s efforts to secure concessions for India from the Nuclear Suppliers' Group.

And you believe the source? I have a bridge to sell you.
The Source happens to be the LARGEST circulated and READ English newspaper ON THE PLANET and one of the most influential media in the world. Yes, I have nooo problems at all believing it. If you don't want to belive it that's your problem. BTW Pakistani Newspapers have no problems quoting it. There are no reasons not source except several pakistani's ranting that it isn't.

China backs India's bid for UNSC seat

Wow..Wishful thinking from bollwood has starting influencing indian political circus now..whats next..a movie titled "in the arms of taiwan"???

taiwan does not need Indian arms and China does not need India recocnition of terriotorial claims on Taiwan because China itself is working to improve ties with Taiwan and seem to mature with the idea of independent taiwan. Chinese prefer peace and business over war and expantion. Even if China annexes taiwan it would not be a peaceful and sustainable due to signification cultural difference cultivated over 60+ years of sepration. China has more benefit is befriending taiwan and using it as a front for western world to trade what it cant through mainland such as sophiscated western technology.

india recognize (at least officially) china's claim of taiwan, otherwise, china would not maintain its foreign relation with india which is the fundamental principle of the one china policy (unlike north and south korea where a country can have recognize both simultaneously, the one china policy prohibits any country that view taiwan as a sovereign state from trading or having diplomatic relationship with the PRC).
-------------------
I would also like to ask is there any fighter in service with IAF on par with F-16, mirage 2000, that is built in india without russian kits ( migs and su-30mki maybe?) because taiwan can get such planes from the west. *LCA is not in service and i don't think its good for taiwan as F-16 have greater range, higher payload and can carry out longer range strike and air denial.
taiwan also operates lafayette frigate from france and the newest dutch submarine. can india build weapons of the same standard without much foreign help? (does india manufacture any major component on the kilo/scorpene)
on land, taiwan also purchased leclerc from france, is arjun as advanced, prove, and reliable?
maybe you will say that india can supply missile to taiwan, but, i am sure there is an international treat (missile convention) that forbids offensive missile of a certain range (i forgot the exact value, but is some thing like 300km) to be exported. i think taiwan already fields some advance cruise missile of their own.

You just stumbled at the wrong end dude, many Indians here ahve made it clear that they don't want to'arm taiwan'. India has both diplomatic & trade relations with Taiwan and we've had that for a long time. Now the crux of our agreement with china is that if and when Taiwan becomes a part of CHina we'll agree to recognizing that (that's assuming that you'll do it in an acceptable way- you know not indvading it overnight or nuking them into submission or anything like that). In return our UNSC seat. Win win.

No, Indian doesn't have a dipomatic relationship with Taiwan. As a pre-condition to have formal dipomatic relationship with PRC, one has to break all the official dipomatic relationship with ROC and recognizing only the PRC (in mainland China) and not the ROC's contention of being the legitimate government of whole territorial China. India had recognized PRC instead of ROC in 1950, so back then India had already accepted China's claim on Taiwan. That is way before India had any interests in UNSC bidding. With or without China's support for Indian's UNSC bidding, it is not a choice for India whether they accept China's claim on Taiwan. Of course if India indeed want to use this as a bargaining chip, then the real option for India is to choose which one it is going to have a dipomatic relationship with. So far in the whole world, there are only 33 countries that recognize ROC government.

"Both the PRC and ROC make it a prerequisite for diplomatic relations that a country does not recognize and conduct any official relations with the other party."

What had happened in the article is what you call unprofessional Journalism. During the meeting between Wen and Singh, I am sure both words of "China would back India’s bid for a permanent seat" and "India respect its neighbour’s claim on Taiwan." has been exchanged as a mutural understanding of each others' stand or pet on the back of sort, but it would never be a trade.

Quite opposite. There is no US embassy or consulates in Taiwan and no Taiwan embassy or consulates in US.

What they have is Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in US and American Institute in Taiwan, both are "private organizations" staffed by career diplomats who are formally "on leave".

I don't know about your one china policy, Ya the Taiwanese embassy is called some 'cultural centre'. Might be you are right- it's just that so many embassies call themselves cultural centres, it's difficult to look at nuances.

Don't know about your history lesson all, I know is that in 2008 we seem to have decided to 'respect China's claim on Taiwan' as a part of a deal. There mst be diplomatic nuances between what we did before and what we did now.

Wat da??? Who's interested in your opinion of professional or unprofessional journalism? The point is that both sides decided to give a concession on one point in mutual interest. China might have had a long standing demand with India and India wanted something in return & the concessions were timed together. While it was very possible for India not to cencede it and China not to give in, both sides agreed to revise their approach on their respective stands. Simple as that. Please keep your opinions on our journalists and media to yourself.

And yet they support Taiwan like hell and yu cant do anything about it!!!!!!!.The same goes for India

See that is how dipomacy and international politics works. Whatever the press or some big mouth politicians said, there will never be a official statement from the government in US saying it does recognize PRC's claim over Taiwan without serious repercussions or even causing serious international incident.

What support did US actually give to Taiwan, besides selling some second rated weapons that all defensive in nature to Taiwan? High ranking officials from Taiwan can not even set their foot on US soil during a transit flight via US on their official trips. They have to stay in the airplane the whole time.
