What's new

Ordinary Pakistanis seem to love Indians. Do we love them back?

To me a random Pakistani on the street is a stranger, I dont hate him and nor do I love him. The Indian populace and Pakistani do not hate each other inherently, is what I believe.
Its been 68yrs since our independence, the generation which had to face partition is gone. And the raison d'eter we still have bitterness between the 2 countries is courtesy our governments (and armed forces). They 've manipulated our thought process and made us believe that the country on the other side of border is our enemy. Agree?

Gonna start crying if you say that one more time and no, I respectfully don't agree. I refuse to give so much credit to the governments and so little to the people. I refuse to believe that we are so naive and easily manipulated. The governments succeed because it takes effort to question their narrative. When the majority is saying something, it's easier to just go with it.

Again, the onus is on you and me to find the narrative which is closer to the truth. We won't be able to find the absolute truth with all the disinformation around us but we can try to get as far away from it as possible. And I don't need to ask because I know you agree.

Seriously? Terrorist attacks in India tracing its origin to Pakistan are a figment of the imagination? The Indian government & the Indian armed forces are making you believe that?

Are you saying that India has never been involved in any sabotaging activities against Pakistan? India does EXACTLY what Pakistan does. No one is innocent here, the sooner you accept that, the easier it will be to fix things.

Beautifully written.

Far more favourably than after 26/11. Musharraf's government had done quite a lot of work with the GoI on many issues and there was an expectation that the new civilian government would continue further down that path though by that time some withdrawing from previously held positions was seen from both the GoP & the Pakistan army.

I don't think many people in Pakistan understand the change in the psyche of Indians after 26/11. That attack completely changed how Indians view Pakistan, removing any trace of a soft corner that many had felt before . The former NSA Shivshankar Menion has alluded to this when he said that there is little interest & no constituency now left in India that actively wants to better relations with Pakistan.

Which one was of a greater magnitude - Indian support in the fall of Dhaka or the Pakistani support in 26/11? Since we are talking about not getting over things, let's clear who has the bragging rights here.

There's a really kool feature on PDF called a like button. They have put it in a corner so not many ppl are able to find it. It's fun to use or so I have heard :P

Beautifully written once again.

Yes, but that is not special. I get too many thanks. Your post certainly deserved more than just posting that button so I wrote that. Actually, i am a student (even after having a long list of degrees behind my name) who always try to learn. I certainly learned to write beautifully from your post. You must have taken your education from a good school. I was not lucky to have that.

I know my man, I'm not much for likes anyway, I say what I believe in without much regard for how it will be perceived. And I'm just like you and any other person on this forum. What works for me though is that I only write about stuff I'm passionate about and when you do that, your writing becomes effortless.

Also, English is our second language or third for some people so we don't have to be perfect in it but reading does help your vocab and fluency.

You asked a question & I answered. Everybody gets over everything, the Japanese got over Hiroshima & Nagasaki and I see no reason to think that India & Pakistanis are any different. 26/11 happened about 6 years ago, it is still embedded in memory & has changed how Indians view Pakistan, no doubt also helped by the internal situation within Pakistan. There is no longer, with most people, any soft corner for Pakistan. Must also add that social & demographic changes in India also added to this change in mindset. Most Indians neither believe that a deep friendship with Pakistan is possible nor do they actively seek it. The only interest that Pakistan attracts, outside of sports & the occasional performer is of a morbid nature and a sense of schadenfreude. There was one exception to that & that was the Peshawar attacks, probably because children were the targets. However, any feelings of a sympathy dissipated the moment a court in Pakistan ordered the release of Lakhvi.

This is not about claiming moral ground, this is just the stating of how Indian public opinion may have fundamentally altered to a point where any future Indo-Pak relationship will be substantially different from what was so far imagined possible by the optimists.

 So he gave you fashion tips and fed you and in return all you did was refrain from criticizing his wife's cooking? You're right you do make a shitty friend.

I also give him good advice about 15% of the time which really is going out of my comfort zone. So yea, we both work towards making our friendship better.

Another reason for Indians(hindu majority) hating pakistanis is mistrating their hindu minority. Most hindus think hindus have a calming/positive influence where are muslims have general tendency towards violence.
Also muslims have slightly higher birth rate, becoming minority in their own country(with a fate like 47 or worse) is worst fear of hindus as @Kanishka pointed out..(although its nearly impossible)

So religion is one reason for hatred. Am sure it plays similarly on otherside.

Pakistanis do go an extra mile in showing hospitality to the Indians. I clearly remember when Indian cricket team used to come to play in Pakistan, people would cheer for them; but when Pakistanis play in India, their grounds used to get reigned by deathly silence if a Pak player scores a boundary or takes an Indian wicket. This difference was actually very striking and whoever follows cricket closely would confirm this.

Although many Indians are dismissing the author as a 'leftist liberal', I believe every Indian should visit Pakistan, this will greatly tone down their hate.

Not possible for an ordinary Indian to visit Pakistan that easily unless if there is an Indo-Pak match going on.

Enna idu? 8-)
Why did you 've to misconstrue my post?
I thought you were smart enough to grasp the subtle hints. Don't we know how PA has been working over time to make the ppl on the other side(of border) believe that India is their enemy, and how they 're trying hard to keep the kashmir issue burning?
Don't expect me to raise a finger at our armed forces, anyone with an army background would not do that.
But I can't say so about our politicians.

Well in that case, the loser will be India and the region because Pakistan isn't going anywhere. We will be neighbors, whether you like it or not. You can play the grouchy mother-in-law all you like but eventually a stable region is in favor of both the countries and for that, you will need to engage Pakistan, and engage sincerely and constructively.
